Engaging pets, but not for everyone

concerned w/safety & comfort of my pets, living with many animals, believe in only the best for my pets

Not smelly, Soft, Great personalities, Fun to watch and play with

Cons

Qualified chinchilla vet hard to find, Not very cuddly, Some bite/spray urine, Expensive, Most can't stand heat above 75 degrees

Chinchillas can be great pets, as long as you understand them! Though they look cute and cuddly, many are independant and would prefer to run around and on you, than to he held close! As such, they don't make good pets for young children.

Always look for reputable breeders or rescues in your area, before the petstore. If for no other reason than financial! You can often get a pedigreed, healthy pet from a rescue or breeder for $50 versus the $120+ at your local petstore.

One negative is that you cannot often buy a good cage for them from a local pet store. They can chew through plastic, so be wary of the common plastic bottom cages! I actually had this happen to me before I knew any better!

Also, due to their very soft and heavy fur coat, they cannot safely be kept in temps over 75 degrees. Heatstroke can be very dangerous for them! It has been known to kill more sensitive animals in under an hour.

Chinchillas are an investment in time and money. Make sure you have plenty of both to devote to these completely charming creatures!

Thanks for the comment on the temperature restrictions! Before I knew much about chinchillas we had one pass away from heat exhaustion (and it was only 78 degrees!). Thanks for all of your great advice
