If you’re looking for a children’s book about adoption for an adopted child, for a baby shower or adoption celebration, my family can make some recommendations.

The Day We Met You by Phoebe Koehler is a sweet narration by parents to their child. It begins with the phone call and ends with them holding their new baby and telling their child “The minute we saw you we knew that we loved you.” This simple and lovely storyline is most appropriate for children age 2 to 5. I really like this children's book about adoption because it shows how not only the parents but also the extended family and friends were all getting ready for this child.

One of my son’s favorite children's adoption books is A Koala for Katie by Jonathan London. As little Katie “adopts,” loves and cares for a Koala she buys at a zoo gift shop, she learns more about her own adoption journey. This one is a great conversation starter about why birthparents chose adoption.  The cartoonish illustrations are really cute. This one is recommended for ages 3-6.

My daughter’s favorite children's adoption book is Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born by adoptive Mom, actress and children’s book author, Jamie Lee Curtis. We’ve been reading this book for over six years and no one gets tired of it. I think you could start reading this one at 2 years of age and never outgrow it. The story is based in reality yet told with a great sense of humor. The illustrations are a riot.

We celebrate adoption everyday but just to let you know, November is National Adoption Month.  National Adoption Month is a great time to show a family your support and joy with a gift like a children's book about adoption.  There are many, many children's adoption books available on Amazon.com.  These are three of our all time favorites.
