After test driving both Honda and Toyota, I decided to give the 2005 Malibu a drive simply because I liked the color of the car sitting on the lot. I also previously owned a 1998 model, so I was curious to experience the difference.
I found the car drove tight like an Accord, but the Malibu's ride was more comfortable. I also noticed the suspension was not soft as a Camry, but felt more sporty. With a 3500 V6 powering the sedan, acceleration met my demand. It was surprising in fact. In the city it pulls off the line nicely and gives you the quick jolt of speed you sometimes want. I was expecting a much lazier car.
The highway proved to be a pleasant experience as well. This car seemed to like the passing gear, and cruised comfortably at 80mph. I was also impressed by the fact I could talk to the person next to me without road noise being too much a factor. It was comfortable, quiet and demonstrated good passing power.
The comforts of the interior are what I would expect from this car. It's got a good stereo, not great. It's seats are comfortable and supportive, but not great. It's features are standard, but not above and beyond. Interior aesthetics are neutral, but not luxurious.
After driving it, the only thing I had to consider was styling. Honda and Toyota do not evoke a whole lot of passion in their styling, but I thought the Malibu was even worse. At least the other two cars look decent, if not a little bit sporty. The Malibu however nearly repelled my purchase with it's styling. So what changed my mind? Affordability and experience.
While Honda and Toyota are known for quality, I've experienced Malibu quality before in my '98. Because they were a readily available car, the price was a bargain. And maintenance proved to be nothing more than the normal breaks, tires, oil changes and car washes. It was my '98 that sold me on the 2005.
I've now spent thousands of miles behind the wheel of the 2005 and enjoy its comfort and performance. I often cruise at 80mph on the highway and achieve higher than 30mpg. What's impressive to me about the Malibu is it doesn't hesitate when you need to the power to pass. Step on the accelerator at 70 or 80mph and the 3500 V6 comes to life shooting you past your objective.
I'm satisfied. I'm pleased I've received Honda and Toyota like quality and performance without paying the premium these two cars bring. I've found the Malibu to be a solid, realiable and comfortable car for thousands less than other similar sedans. It's ugly, but it's inexpensive reliability.
