It used to be that there were 5% rewards cards out there, but one by one they limited the amount you could earn annually (usually $300).  Then, the 5% itself began to disappear.  It's rare now to get rewards over 1%, and even rarer to get unlimited rewards.

There are a couple cards out there which offer 1% for the first $1500, then an inflated amount thereafter, but by their definition of what is eligible for the high reward level, SuperWalmart, SuperTarget, Kroger--indeed any national grocier--is ineligible.  So by the time you spend enough to get up to the higher level, and take into consideration that you're probably only getting rewarded for it on gas and drugstore purchases, you never do much better than 1.2-1.3% overall.

With 3% back in my top three categories, I am usually getting 3% back on 80% of my purchases, so my overall reward level is around 2.6%, and there's no annual maximum.  Multiply that by $20K annual spending, and this card is paying me roughly $500/yr to use it.

If you are a controlled spender, who pays off your bill every month (with the advent of internet payments, I even pay mine off every week, so that my reported balance to the credit bureaus is always low), this is absolutely the card for you!.
