Charter Communications is by and far the WORST company I've ever had to deal with, period. Living in a small town in SC, we were limited to either 56k dial up, or Charter "high speed" cable, when they finally started offering it. I signed up as soon as it became available. This is when the problems started. The initial sales person I talked to, told me that in order to get the high speed connection, I also had to have Charter cable tv. I found out afterwards from calling again and asking a supervisor why this was necessary, he informed me that this was not the case and scheduled me to be 'hooked up', as it were. They were a week late in coming to install everything.

After finally being connected, everything worked fine for the first three months. During that time, I had no problems, whatsoever. It was blazing fast and perfectly stable. When it worked, it was terrific, but unfortunately, that wasn't to last. Shortly into the fourth month of service, the entire system went south. I was constantly having to reboot my modem, only to be able to stay on line for ten to fifteen minutes at a time. Customer service was no help at all, only telling me to reboot my modem, which I already knew to do, and finally scheduled a service date. This led to two weeks with no connectivity at all. I say two weeks, because the service tech was a week and a half late.

This was the start of a never ending cycle of a week to a month's worth of connectivity and no problems, to a week or more of no connectivity whatsoever, with the same routine of scheduled and missed service dates, arguments with customer service, etc. In the end, the local phone company finally offered DSL so we cancelled our Charter "service", and turned in the modem that they gave us. I found out after buying a new house that Charter was charging me for service, two months after I had cancelled and it had shown up on my credit rating. I had to dispute it to get it off.

I know people who will say they've never had a problem with Charter and they love it. I can only tell you though that my experience with this company was a nightmare, tosay the least. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who has a choice. The overall pro of the service was when it's connected, it's reliable and fast. The cons are many and outweigh the pros and they include horrible customer service, extended internet outage, constant droppings, missed appointments and just overall bad service.
