I ate lunch at the Chart House in May 08. It is a well-known for romantic dinning, but has always been a little too demanding of my pocketbook. However, I was in Alexandria for a special event, I had heard a lot about the restaurant, so I took my sister out to lunch.

After getting a quick tour of all the dinning nooks available inside (for the view of the water, there were a huge number of seats available in this establishment - I was impressed), we decided to wait for a table out on the deck since it was a beautiful day with just a hint of a breeze. We were seated by the railing for an unobstructed view of the sailboats, should any float by, and all the tables were covered by huge umbrellas, so we were protected from the direct sun.

Our waiter appeared to be new at his job, so we allowed for that. A more experienced waitress at the next table, was much more attentive to her table's needs. My sister ordered a salad which filled the plate, and, as in days gone by, I had to help her clean her plate. My lunch was sirloin tips with garlic mashed potatoes. First, I had to convince myself to pay so much for a simple lunch. Secondly, my anticipations were not met. I must say that my teriyaki sirloin tips were utterly delicious and warmed to a just-right rare, BUT there were only four of the little things. A MacDonald's chicken nugget is the same size. The garlic potatoes were served barely warm, not hot, and maintained the round shape of the scoop (I like my mashed potatoes served as if I were at home - spread them out a bit). The potatoes were dry in consistency (I really needed my tea to get them down), and I couldn't taste any garlic.

I left with an ambivalent feeling. My sister got a good lunch, and I got a nibble, both with a hefty price, but I guess I was not paying for the food, but for the atmosphere. So if you want to have a very romantic dinner, especially in the evening lights reflecting off the water, and price is no option, then this is the place to be.

I wouldn't be surprized if you would rather have been at one of those picnics. : )

LOL. Yes, I thought I was being generous as well, but it is fine dining with atmosphere, and I'm not really into that. I thought about what others had told me about their experiences and marked it up. My idea of riverside dinning is a picnic under a tree on the bank of a very quiet river.

Thanks for the info. I don't think we'll be going there if we go to Virginia this year. You were generous with your rating.
