* Bright burnished copper with short, thin cream colored head.
* Mildly sweet malt aroma with a brief whiff of caramel and toasty notes.
* Foretaste is a repeat of the aroma: subdued sweet malt flavor offers hint of caramel, toast and even nougat.
* Finish is mellow; mild malt sweetness fades away slowly. Balance is in check.
* Body is medium-light; mouthfeel has light palate-coating quality.
Synhopsis:
Dos Equis Ambar (not a misspelling) is the "dark" version of regular Dos Equis.
I've always been a bit partial to the Dos Equis beers for a good reason- these brews have not been completely "Americanized" for export to the U.S. They are not packaged in clear bottles and they do not hew to the concept of Mexican beers being light and fizzy (with a wedge of lime crammed in the neck of the bottle).
Unlike most of the other Mexican-made beers, Dos Equis still does justice to its history as one of the last Vienna style lagers made in the Western hemisphere. This virtually unknown style was more in vogue while Mexico was still under the rule of Austrian Emperor Maximilian back in the 1800's.
