Junk mail drives me crazy.  The Yellow Pages being dropped at my front door is a huge waste of paper and resources.   The same goes for the zillions of catalogs that come to our house.  Tonight my wife tore the back covers off 14 catalogs and I went to CatalogChoice.org and signed up to have our names removed from these lists.  I was careful to check out the background of Catalog Choice to make sure they were not a front organization looking to collect and sell our name to direct marketers.

From my research, CatalogChoice.org checked out.  They are backed by a not for profit environmental organization and supported by several reputable foundations.  They are endorsed by the NRDC which is a blue chip environmental advocacy organization.

I found the site VERY easy to use and well designed.  I will check back here in few weeks and let you know how successful I was at stopping the flood of junk mail.

In the meantime, put this on your to do list to reduce clutter in your house and help do your part to save the environment.

It is hard to tell but I will keep a close eye on it as we come into the crazy catalog season.

Well, Matt, I'm waiting to hear your response as to why I am still receiving my magazines and a lot of new ones. It's been a month, so what have you found out about Catalog Choice?

I heard about this site and that it was awesome. I was going to sign up for their services but then I remembered I don't get any junk magazines. Yipee! But I know where to go if I start.

Interesting. Thanks for your comment. The background of the company seemed very blue chip. I will have to give them a call and make sure they know about your feedback. I will let you know what they say. It is such a great idea. I wish it would work!

I have been with Catalog Choice since May and I've not seen the slightest reduction in the catalogs that I receive. In fact, I'm getting more! I've emailed them at least twice explaining my situation. After the first email, I received a thank you of sorts for allowing them do opt out my magazines, but they didn't explain why I'm still receiving them, in addition to several new ones. Are they selling my name and address? Makes one wonder! My second email was never answered. The bottom line is, I'm not having the least bit of success with this group and they are certainly not living up to my expectations of reducing the number of catalogs that I receive. I have found that the catalog companies are changing my customer number and this allows the delivery of the same catalogs coming to my residence. Bottom line: I'm very disappointed.

Thanks for the comment. I will have to keep an eye on the actual effect this is having.

I have started using this site in April and I'm still receiving the same catalogs even though the status on them is confirmed. So far, I see that all these companies do is change the customer number and they still keep coming!!! It seems to be a never ending battle. Not blaming catalog choice here...they do what they are supposed to do. These catalog companies just don't get it. Especially the ones that do not participate.

What a useful review! We're always fighting the paper war in our house.

Great - we recycle the junk mail - but not getting it in the first place would be even better.

Funny, my wife and I were just discussing the absolute waste of all those catalogs that we get and recycle daily. We'll have to check this site out.

This sounds so interesting that I can't wait to get more junk mail to give it a try!
