Cars

Disney-Pixar, 2006

Rated G for General Audiences

Cars is a fun, family movie that combines impressive animation, great music and excellent voice talents. The characters are well-developed, the humor is appropriate and the story line is interesting and also promotes good moral themes.

Directed by John Lasseter, director of Toy Story 2, Cars includes the voice talents of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt and Larry the Cable Guy.

Characters in Cars:

Lightning McQueen (Wilson) is a sleek, red race car rookie who has just earned a three-way tie in the Piston Cup. On his way to the tie-breaker, he loses his way on Route 66 and ends up in the forgotten and suffering town of Radiator Springs. His cocky, "I've got to get out of here" attitude isn't exactly appreciated by the town's residents including former big shot lawyer turned small town advocate, Sally Carrera (Hunt), Mater, the lovable tow truck (Larry the Cable Guy) and especially the former great, now old-timer patriarch Doc Hudson (Newman).

Themes in Cars:

This movie sheds light on the economic and other impacts on small towns that become by-passed by large highways. The movie also touches on the theme that "older and wiser" have a lot to offer and "beauty" doesn't represent character. Lightning has to make hard decisions and learn lessons about putting the needs of others before his own desires.

I've always thought Paul Newman's voice was just attractive as his eyes and this movie proves it. Sight unseen, Newman still adds a lot of depth to his character and this movie.

The music is a bonus as well and includes songs by Rascall Flats, Sheryl Crow and James Taylor.

This movie does have its slow moments where it seems to "idle" but overall is very entertaining. The animation that gives each "car" a personality is very well-done. The characters are endearing and humor is fresh. While there's lots of "racing" talk, the "racing" really becomes a back drop to the bigger picture of the character's relationships and personal growth.

My Viewpoint:

Cars is a funny, entertaining movie that is just good, clean fun for families. Kids will love the animation and adults will appreciate the themes and messages. Both my daughter and son loved this movie but it was a big bonus that my husband and I enjoyed it as well. Cars illustrates that winning isn't everything but nonetheless, Cars is a winner.
