A few years ago we paid off our timeshare for the Carriage House. We bought a studio in the red zone which meant that we got the itty-bitty space with a Murphy bed available anytime of the year that we wanted. We never intended to stay at the Carriage House. The Poconos are only an hour's drive away from us and makes a great day trip despite the traffic.
We always believed that we would bank our week and exchange it with Interval International at another more sensational vacation spot for us. It was explained to us that despite our humble studio, the receiving timeshare must provide us with something as close to ours - often a one-bedroom or even a two-bedroom. We've exchanged for Lake Havasu, AR, New Orleans Garden District and a resort just five minutes away from Walt Disney World. We have also given our timeshare rental in exchange for favors and gifts or rented them to close friends who we trusted to take care of the facility as we would. One year my girlfriend and her family of four rented the same Disney timeshare and spent Thanksgiving there. She cooked a whole Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings!
For 2006 and 2007, I decided to use the timeshare to catch up on making an album by scrapbooking and making homemade Christmas cards respectively. In fact, I just got back today and felt the need to review this lifestyle and the resort.
Because we bought from a timeshare that needed a great deal of work, it was very affordable to buy in the a studio in the red zone. We only have just the two of us and a dog so it made it a very easy decision. I do not regret our purchase one bit. We will continue to bank our week and exchange it for land vacations in the future and now the timeshare is paid for and we have a deeded property not just a lease on the timeshare for 20 years or more. The only cost we incur is the yearly maintenance fee which is rapidly increasing as they do renovations on the larger models.
I accomplished what I intended to do this week. I make dozens of Christmas cards to send to family and friends for Holiday greetings and Christmas gifts. I was happy to be there but am happier to be home.
