To the Point

I use two brands of yarn to make my blankets. The first one I started with is the brand, Caron.

A Closer View

My friend gave me a pattern for the easiest blanket. If I can follow it anyone can. Let me know if you want it. I have made it in all sizes from a doll blanket to one for an adult. She told me that she uses Caron for two reasons.

  1. There is no dye lot. What that means is that in a year if I wanted to make a blanket bigger that I already worked on and used the color espresso, I could walk into a store that sells Caron and get espresso. It would be the exact same color as the one from a year ago. You’ll note on some yard it says to buy enough to finish your project. This is because the colors may not be the same.
  1. This yarn is machine washable and can be put in the dryer which comes in very handy if you are making baby blankets.

It is made of 100% acrylic and comes in so many colors. In fact you name a color and you’ll find it. I use both the One Pound (16 ounces but they call them One Pound on the label.) skeins which cost me $4.99 and the 7-ounce skeins which cost about $2.49 depending on the size of the blanket.

This yarn can be hand washed and dry cleaned if you wish.

You can buy it in a soft version. I have bought it in soft but haven’t used it yet. I can tell from touching it that it won’t be great for blankets because the yarn separates a bit. It will be nicer for scarves.

The website http://www.caron.com/ouryarns.html gives a complete list of all the types of yarns Caron makes other than Simply Soft and One Pound. A few others are Bliss, Charming and Glitter.

There are too many colors to mention but a few I’ve used are Cape Cod blue with rose, and deep violet with soft lilac.

Caron yarns are absolutely a steal at the price -- I love 'em! And I say that as a person with $40/skein silk sitting in my stash waiting for my next cast on. The Simply Soft actually lovely blankets, though you're right it's a bit splitty. I'm used to splitty though, since my favorite fibers are cotton, bamboo, and the like.

My only beef about it: it's machinable washable alright but you have to be careful with it in the dryer. ONLY USE LOW HEAT. High heat takes most of the softness and luster out of the yarn and leaves it feeling like "cheap acrylic."

Thanks, please use the word knitter loosely (grin). I am having fun with this one pattern though and it keeps my hands busy while I'm watching TV or in the car i.e. less food in my mouth! jo

I didn't know you're a knitter! I can knit small things but I'm not very good. I'm much better at crochet and I love Caron yarns too. Great review!
