Carnival is a good cruise line to start out with--you can pick a shorter trip to a number of locations. If you're not sure you will like cruising you can get a three day 'taste' at less than $200 if you check for the deals.
Crew speaks excellent English, friendly and from all over the world!
Food portions are generous, nice variety of main meals. Dress code is pretty casual even on formal night--take work clothes in black if you're not into tuxedo and promwear!
Many types of entertainment available--from broadway type shows to bingo.
Don't be surprised to hear way more than you care about tanzanite and diamonds no matter where you cruise too.
I recommend Alaska, Panama Canal, Western Carribean. Not crazy about the Bahamas. You don't need to sign up for additional cost 'shore excursions' in most ports--there are many available, but most ports have plenty of free or low cost site seeing opportunities available that do not involve paying more money to Carnival!
