A first-time mom is so bombarded with coupons, samples and promotional items (even diapers bags) from the BIG drug companies, it only makes sense that they would want to at least try them out. But when it comes to Isomil, Similac and Enfamil, don't bother. They are foamy when mixed (and take forever to settle down) which explains my son's gassy reaction to them. The cries broke my heart. The smell was awful, too. Then a friend recommended Carnation/Nestle Good Start Supreme. I got the kind that also had DHA and ARA after reading about all the benefits to brain and eye development. My son took to this formula right away and slept much more peacefully while it was digested. We continued to purchase the powdered version for 12 months, at which time we switched him to whole milk, at the pediatrician's direction. If he noticed the difference at all, we couldn't tell. He went from formula to cow's milk without skipping a beat. The same was true with our second son, although this time I was able to breast-feed through the first 6 months of his life. When my supply decreased, I splurged on the pre-mixed ready-to-serve formula in a can... the same Good Start Supreme with DHA and ARA. He took to it right away. I found an excellent deal on cases of them (6 cans of 32 oz each) at Babies-R-Us that saved us almost as much money as if I'd purchased the powder all along. My second son just had his first birthday, so we are all done with formula. But if we had to do it again, I'd buy the exact same kind without question! Oh, for the lactose intolerant, Carnation/Nestle Good Start makes a Soy version, which we've also tried but went right back to the regular kind.
