To the Point

I went into our local health food store to find fish oil without gelatin. I’ve been taking Omega 3 for a long time and wanted to continue. I found out that the soft pills are made with gelatin because that holds them together. Jeff, the owner, suggested Carlson Fish Oil. Like a little kid I hold my nose and take it every day.

A Closer View

Carlson Fish Oil comes in a 16.9-ounce bottle. We are told that it has a “great orange taste.” Jeff told me it wasn’t as bad as it could be. It is bottled in Norway and must be refrigerated.

It can be taken by the teaspoonful, mixed with foods or “try it on salads.” This wasn’t the first time I used liquid Omega 3 but it had been awhile. My first teaspoonful wasn’t bad. I expected worse but as the days and weeks went on the taste got worse and worse. It’s thick and oily as you would expect. Still I take it and will continue to because I’d rather not have gelatin. I take other supplements that are gelatin based because there are no alternatives.

One serving size (There are 100 servings.) has 40 calories; 2 grams of fat and more importantly 1600 mg of Omega 3 Fatty Acids; 800 mg of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid); 500 mg of DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and 300 mg of other Omega fatty acids. In addition to the fish oil it has natural orange flavor, rosemary extract, ascorbyl palmitate and natural tocopherols.

This should be taken at mealtime and used preferably within a month of opening the bottle.

Will I buy it again? Yes. Although the bottle is greasy and the taste borders on horrible it’s painless and gives me what is now considered a must have in the world of supplements – fish oil.

Jo's Viewpoint

I don't like it but it's good for me so I have to like it!

Cost: About $22

Hi Jo, Just wanted to inform you that Nordic Naturals has great tasting fish oils that isn't oily and doesn't leave a lingering fishy taste caused by "fish burps". Not only is their product already great tasting, they have 4 other flavors: peach, orange, strawberry and lemon. On their website, you can search for the nearest store that carries their products. www.nordicnaturals.com Hope that helps.
