Canon - PowerShot SD1000 Digital Camera Review Summary

Need a digital camera that can be with you always so when that photo op of a lifetime occurs, you’re ready? If you do, our reviewers are very impressed with the Canon Powershot SD1000, the smallest of Canon’s Digital Elph SD Series. This ultra-compact digital camera is consistently rated best in class by both professional and consumer reviewers. Not only does it offer ultra-compact size and a rugged build, our reviewers love the excellent quality prints we have come to expect from a Canon Digicam. While it is a totally automatic camera it is popular with both casual snap-shooters as well as professionals needing a pocketable back-up camera. On the down-side, some may find its controls a bit small for comfortable handling. Compare the Canon Powershot SD1000 to ultra-compacts from other manufacturers.

Got a good deal on this camera online.  Some reseller through eBay.  I thought the Canon SD800 had a lot of features I didn't need, and the price tag was at least $50 more.  Went with the SD1000 and have been VERY happy.

The style is very cool, with Canon going back to it's original boxy Elph design. ...

I carry Canon Power Shot A1000 IS in my purse all the time.  It is so light weight and compact it's hardly noticable and I never "wish" I had my camera with me anymore!  This camera is so easy to use, the quality of the photos is amazing; colors are bright and realistic.

On a recent vacation we...

The Canan Power Shot SD1000 is an ultra compact (3.38 x 2.11 x 0.76 in.) camera with 7.1 Mega Pixels and a 3x optical zoom and Canon's new DIGIC III processor. I purchased this camera am my family's main camera. My criteria were: small enough to take anywhere, good pictures of people/kids, fast response to photo kids on the move, and good quality movies (camcorder replacement). The SD1000 is a great fit and the only real compromise I have to make is no optical zooming for movies, and dealing with red-eye in almost all indoor pictures. My specific thoughts on this camera are:

Size: Perfect,...

Before buying this camera, I had originally bought a Kodak Easy Share 8MP. That was a great camera, but it lacked one of the most important features to me- a quick shutter speed. As the mother of a two year-old, it can often be hard to get a good candid shot because of my daughter's short attention span. With the Kodak, she would look at the camera and smile, but by the time the picture was taken, she would have already looked away. I had that camera for 3 weeks and did not get one decent picture of her, which was disappointing because her birthday fell within that time frame.

 I went online and...

The past two cameras I have owned have been Kodak. I had my last Kodak for only a year and it broke and they wanted over $100 to fix it, which was crazy. So, I asked for a camera for Christmas.

I did my research and decided on this one as it has gotten great reviews from amateurs and pros alike. I wanted something as small as my Kodak so this fit the bill. I am so happy with this camera. It is much more user friendly than my Kodak as far as the menus, etc. I get pretty good indoor shots, better than I did with my Kodak.

As far as the size some say it's too small but I disagree, I wanted something...

I purchased this camera because it was able to fit in my shirt pocket and starts up very quickly.  I carry the SD1000 around for quick/easy access photos when I'm not lugging around my digital SLR.  Another positive aspect of using this camera is the large screen that quickly displays the photos.  One final feature worth mentioning is the SD1000 captures pretty good quality video.  One thing that I found challenging is the battery life - I ended up picking up a spare battery and discovered that sticking with the Canon brand yields a longer lasting battery.

We have a small digital camera and a big $1000 digital camera.  The small one takes great videos - but poor pictures.  The big one takes AMAZING photographs - but doesn't take videos, and...is huge.  What was I to do for my three-month trip to Russia?  Luckily a friend had this camera and I could see how great it was.  It's really everything a small digital camera should be.  Long battery life, 12x zoom, bright colors, clarity, high-quality video where you can zoom in & out while you're recording, fun settings such as having only one color show up and everything else be black & white, or... read full review »

All I wanted for Christmas was a GOOD digital camera. After my husband agreed that this would be our joint present and  would spend around $250, I began to research cameras and reviews. As a member of MYPOINTS, I searched through their numerous sites selling cameras and read reviews for 6 hours. What I found was that the Canon Digital Elph SD1000 IXUS 70 had consistently good reviews in the over 200 that I read. All other cameras had something that made me think....maybe I don't want that one. The cons for this camera first....No low battery indicator, red eye on some indoor shots (fixed with... read full review »

So far, my experience with the Canon PowerShot SD1000 has been great.  Being a college student, my camera really takes a beating. I take my camera virtually everywhere, and it still works perfectly after having it for over a year. The Camera is small enough that I can fit it easily into a small clutch, but solid enough that I can still hold onto it easily.

I'm a novice photographer, so I needed a camera that I could use easily without a lot of confusion. The SD1000 has an automatic setting that works well in pretty much every light. It also has a manual setting that lets me play with colors...

The Canon Powershot 7.0 Digital Elph camera has gone beyond all of my expectations as a "point and shoot" camera.  On the Auto mode it works wonderfully for those that do not know much about taking photography but want good quality pictures of their pets, children and grandchildren or anything!

Not only does the Auto mode work well but the Manual mode has much to play with!  Fun color changing modes that we love to play around with.  A much much used "Kids & Pets" setting that can capture even the quickest running child! :)

On top of the great setting options it has a 7.0 megapixel camera...

Ok, I love this camera!! It takes great great great pictures.  The color is wonderful.  You can select differnt color setting too such as: lighter skin tone, darker skin tone, black and white, sepia, and more!!  This is great to make you skin look better even in bad lighting.  I use to own Sony Digital Cameras in the past and not that I don't like Sony but I am liking this Canon more.  Actually I lost my first one and went out and bought the exact same model.  The only only downfall is the no battery indicator warning.  You don't see the status of your battery life basically you just wait...

Great camera. I bought for my wife for xmas and opened it to get it ready for her. Takes clear pics and a decent shutter speed. Built solid. Nice LCD. Great tools. I would definitely recommend!! I had a sony before and it was a horrible camera. I had to get it fixed many times. Think the repair guy had it more than I did. I was so let down, it took me a while to find a good camera that I would want to spend money on. I went into Best Buy to look but not purchase and the guy showed me the SD1000. And the great thing the sales guy did not pressure me in buying the camera right then and there. Instead... read full review »

I have only had 2 digital cameras in my "digital camera career" and both have been Canon PowerShots.  For Xmas my husband bought me a Sony digital camera (not sure of the model right now) and I took a few pictures.  Once we uploaded them onto our computer, we were shocked at the poor quality of the pictures... our pictures from our 6 yr old Canon PowerShot camera were WAY better quality.  He ended up exchanging the Sony for the Canon PowerShot SD1000 (which had the same megapixels, and optical zoom etc. as the Sony)  Have we have not looked back since!

The things I love best about the camera...

I recieved this camera as a birthday present. I had testing and using my friends cameras to find the one I wanted for a couple of years. Exactly long enough to figure out how to "break" the old camera with out being obvious and it was out of warranty. After extensive testing I found the Cannon Powershot SD1000. It is a great size for my purse. I use my camera all of the time. No, not as a photographer, as a person who likes to capture my life. I also use it for work. I am in marketing and at times need the highest resolution and other times need special tricks to make the back end of my job easier....

I have had this camera for about a year, and I love it!  The small size allows you to put it in a pocket and take it along on all your adventures so that that when a photo opportunity arrives you are ready.  Whether it is a great vacation or just a sunset as you are driving down the road.

This camera features a face-focusing feature which identifies faces and focuses on them.  There are many settings for taking pictures including indoor, snow, beach, fireworks, kids and pets (for fast moving objects), night time, in addition to different focal lengths from closeups (flowers) to infinity (that...
