Looking for the best Digital Compact camera money can buy? Look no further. This is the creme de la creme, if the end result matters. And no, I'm not on Canon's payroll.

Built and Aesthetics

This camera was designed with a retro look & feel and if you're an old-school 35mm Leica Compact fan, you're gonna love this. It's also got a good amount of weight as well. I like a bit of weight because it keeps my hands steady. Built quality is excellent.

I will admit that I am the kind of gadget buyer that loves to have the new stuff, but does not always learn how to use all the capabilities.  I have however learned to rely on friends that really know their stuff to decide which gadget has the right combination of features and price.

Our recent purchase of the Canon G9 was based on at least five different people who are both techie and artsy telling us that the G9 was absolute best compact camera in terms of quality.  We did not buy it because of all the high end custom features such as the ability to export pictures in a RAW format. Weighing about 0.2 ounce more than its predecessor--likely the result of the larger LCD--the G9 nevertheless still comes in at just under 13 ounces. Controls cover the areas of the top and back of the camera not covered by the LCD or the optical viewfinder, leaving just enough space for a decent handhold. It's still true that those with large hands may find it difficult to firmly grip the G9 without accidentally covering one button or another. I also found myself wishing that the shutter button and zoom switches were just a bit larger.

Though...

The 3-inch LCD is reasonably easy to see in bright sunlight and has a wide viewing angle, but on playback, images tend to look a bit softer with more blown-out highlights than they actually do--you may want to hold off deleting images until you view them on a full-size display. Though the viewfinder remains larger and more usable than most, I think I was happier with the smaller LCD and bigger optical model on the G7. Despite its decent movie-capture quality, without the ability to zoom the lens during video, I find the feature less useful on the G9 than on other cameras.

The G9 is a great alternative to an SLR if you don't feel like carrying something huge, or losing your camera in your back pocket. it's a happy medium.
Hi ISO, long exposure capabilities and takes beautiful Macros, my only complaint is that there is no shutter remote.

This camara has great quality and lasts a long time.
