I will admit that I am the kind of gadget buyer that loves to have the new stuff, but does not always learn how to use all the capabilities.  I have however learned to rely on friends that really know their stuff to decide which gadget has the right combination of features and price.

Our recent purchase of the Canon G9 was based on at least five different people who are both techie and artsy telling us that the G9 was absolute best compact camera in terms of quality.  We did not buy it because of all the high end custom features such as the ability to export pictures in a RAW format. We bought it because it would take better pictures that our Canon Sureshot compact camera but not be as bulky as our Canon Rebel.

That is why I call it a tweener.  If you are looking for portability AND very high quality, than the G9 should be a camera you consider.  It is probably over kill because it has so many other features and settings that I am hoping to use and learn more about one day, but for now, from a very practical point of view, I am very happy with the camera.  The retractable zoom lens helps it have a very sleek profile which also makes it easy to slip into a loose pocket.  The Canon Rebel can only be lugged around on your neck which makes it a major drag if you are going to a ball game or someother event where you want to be able to store your camera between plays.
