Older but great Camera

4

Although it is an older camera that has been superseded by newer models, the Canon Powershot G7 is still, a solid, excellent camera, if rather bulky for a compact, capable of doing great work, and with only a couple downsides. If one is looking for a compact, high-performance camera to take snapshots or as a backup, it still bears consideration if one can find a good price on one still in good condition. Image Quality The G7 generally produces excellent, high-quality images, suitable for large prints or online images, provided the proper exposure settings and only the zoom capabilities of the lens (which sometimes are not as much as one would like), and not the artificial zoom beyond that are used. Although I have heard of complaints of there being some distortion in wide-angle shots, I have not personally experienced this problem. It should be noted that the G7 does not support RAW format images, which could be an issue for someone who wants to do a lot of editing. Performance For the most part, the performance of the G7 is good, as besides taking good-quality images, it generally zooms, focuses, and snaps the picture quickly, although not as fast as a SLR, and there can be some lag. However, the auto-focus sometimes gets a bit confused, and bases its focusing off something other than the intended subject, requiring a couple tries to get right. Ease of Use Ease of use is one of two notable shortcomings of the G7. Although the basic shooting functions, zoom, and focus controls are fairly straightforward, taking advantage of any of the advanced functions or changing the settings can get pretty complicated, requiring one to go through a lot of menus that are not exactly intuitive. Nor does the manual always provide a clear explanation of all of that, and what to do to achieve certain effects. I would recommend finding a commercial guide on how to use the camera, and/or a quick reference sheet and become quite familiar with them if one intends to use the advanced features that allow the camera to be used to its full potential. Furthermore, the viewfinder is not that great, which could be a problem for those who prefer to use it as opposed to the LCD screen to set up their shots. Durability The G7 is a rather solidly built camera, and has held up quite well to regular, if somewhat infrequent use. Battery Life I personally have not had any issues with the battery life of the camera, although I don't typically shoot dozens of pictures at a time, or use some of the more intensive modes, or the video capability. If the specs are to be believed, a fully charged battery in top shape is good for a couple hundred shots, although I'm not sure it would last quite that long from what I've been able to observe in use. Should one be thinking about using some of the more complicated modes, or be taking lots of pictures, such as at a sporting event, graduation, or a party, one might want to think about getting a second battery to haul along as a backup. Portability Portability is the other big shortcoming of the G7. Even though the camera is "supposedly" a compact, it stretches that term to the very limit, and is actually a fairly big and hefty item as far as portable electronic devices go. (According to the offical specs on the Canon website, the G7 is 4.19" high, 2.83" high, and 1.67" deep, or in more personal terms, about the size of 2 decks of cards stacked on top of each other, as well as weighing 11.3 oz.) Forget about sticking it into a regular pants or shirt pocket, as its size and bulk means that it has to be carried in a coat pocket, a cargo-type pocket if ones pants or shirt has those, a bag, or in the sort of case that can be hung from on a belt.

I love the quality on my camera!!!

I had the G6 before this camera and it had a flip viewfinder that I absolutely loved.  I could throw the camera in my purse and not worry about scratching the viewfinder.  This one doesn't have that.  It does have a bigger window though.  It takes great pictures.  At 10mp's, it's hard not to get a good shot.

My Canon PowerShot G7 is an outstanding camera!

I love to take pictures and make them into Scrapbooks and I have done it for years. I am making Scrapbooks for my kids and my Husband and I am because of that I like to take a lot of pictures. I think it is important to have a good picture in color and quality so I have had many different camera's. The camera I had before the Canon PowerShot G7 was the digital Canon like a 35" film camera. So it was bigger and took up more space. I really likeed the pictures quality witht he Canon but I did not like the size of the camera. So my Aunt got this Canon PowerShot G7 and she loved it. I went tot he store and tried it out and it looked promising so we bought one. Well I am so glad I did . I have not had it for a few years and I have been so pleased with it. It takes GREAT pictures. It fits into my camera bag together with my small video camera and I can put it in my purse if we are going place and I just want a great small camera. It has been a wonderful investment and it is a great camera if you do not want to compromise on the quality of your picture and still have a small camera. I love my **Canon PowerShot G7!**

Canon G7: Not bad...may be some durability issues

4

I have owned a Canon G7 for the past 2 years and have used it mainly as a point and shoot vacation camera.  This camera is fully featured: everything you can ask for in a point and shoot camera is present in this model.  It can even accept lens (with adapters you can buy) from more advanced DSLR models if the user requires an upgrade in image quality. There are really no major issues with the functionality of the camera from a basic standpoint.  The camera does what it does well: it takes very good photos and can offer the user a wide variety of modes from which to shoot.  This camera also takes video up to 1024x768 resolution.  The quality of both the photos and videos this is capable of in even default setting sare excellent. Where this camera falls short however, is build quality.  The damper lever on my zoom broke very quickly, which means that you have to manually re-center the zoom every time you use it on the camera, otherwise, the camera will either zoom ALL the way IN or ALL the way out.  Very annoying, to say the least.  Battery life on the camera also leaves a bit to be desired: make sure to buy extra batteries (Canon-branded...) if you plan on shooting for a full day.

Good for the money Canon

Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance I have now taken almost 10,000 images with this camera and it has been very dependable. Great pictures with adequate light. I wish it had better low light sensitivity and the articulated lcd screen. Both of these issues have been addressed with the new G11 model. I expect to upgrade soon. The small size for such capability is important to me because I need a camera I can carry with me at all times and not feel burdened with the weight of it as I did with my Canon FT QL 35mm film camera years ago. One major complaint is that the labeling of the buttons like MENU, white ink on the black surface, easily wears off with use. I used clear nail polish which delayed the wear but not eliminated it.

I love the canon powershot's ease of use!

I love my canon powershot. It is easy to use and comes with many great features. I like that I can select individual colors or throw them out and shoot in B&w. It's a little big, but for me (I have a "big" pro camera too) it seems small. I wish I could use it for all my photo shoots. It doesn't have high mp, that's the down side. LOVE the zoom!

I love this camera

Well I had a different canon powershot and it got messed up at the ocean. We decided to get another one the same brand just a little different and we love it more than the first! This camera takes great pictures and I am no experienced photographer. The colors are great and it is well worth the money spent IMO.
