I have owned the Canon EOS Rebel digital camera for about a year now.  I have found that the unit is easy to use and understand and would make an excellent choice for someone with a desire to go into professional photography.  I have done three professional jobs; a family reunion, a wedding, and an anniversary party.  The clients were very pleased with the end result.  The camera has a wide variety of settings that will allow you to take pictures of mountains down to the tiniest flower in your grass and with equal clarity.  In southern Alabama we have a little blue flower that is about 1/4 inch in diameter and I have taken perfectly clear pictures of them.  Last month (October, 2008) I spent a week in southern Arizona taking pictures of the mountains.  I also went to Boothill Cemetery and Tombstone, Arizona (OK Corral).  We also traveled to two old fashioned Spanish missions and I photographed floors, walls and ceilings with exceptional clarity.  Now, the missions were more interesting for quality because I didn't use flash.  I felt that flash would be disrespectful to the environment.  There is a setting on the camera that is "candlelight" and you can photograph birthday parties or dimly lit situations by using this setting.  There is also a portrait setting for "people close-ups" and a "sports" setting for fast action situations.  That setting is especially pleasing for taking pictures of the kids diving into a pool, or for the soccer mom that wants a picture of her child zooming down the field for a goal.  Also, the camera has manual or automatic focus.  I found that manual focus is good for scenery, etc., and the auto focus works well for sports and portraits.  In experimenting with settings and focus, I found certain things work well for ME, but my point is that the flexibility of this camera is wonderful.  Also, it is a very "expandable" camera as you can buy lenses and flash units for the camera as add-ons.
