We recently bought a Canon Digital XT Rebel. It takes AWESOME pictures. The quality of the pictures for digital is just like a professional film camera. You are paying for a name, not a digital camera in my opinion. It is interchangeable with the lenses from the 35MM, that is a nice plus. The camera isn't like the new hand sized ones you can purchase today. The settings on it are easy to understand. You have lots of options with the type of picture you can take, with or without flash, portrait, landscape, close up, night, etc. etc. If you have the $600 or so to spare then by all means purchase it. It's a digital that will make you feel like you are a professional photographer. You can make a mistake and it will turn out like you knew what you were doing!
