Quality seems to have gone down
When Canidae Chicken Meal and Rice dog food first became available in my area, I bought a bag because I had fed Canidae in the past with good results. The first thing I noticed was how greasy the food was. It left an oily sheen on my hands and in the dogs' bowls. One of my dogs has very bad skin, though, so I thought the extra oil could benefit his dry coat. I was willing to give it a try. It was a rough transitional period, leaving the dogs very gassy and with loose, foul smelling bowel movements. I decided to try sticking it out until the transition period passed, though, since I knew it was a different food than they were used to and I needed to give them time for their systems to acclimate. After a couple weeks though, they never adjusted. The second bag I bought was even greasier, and had a pungent odor to it. This was nothing like the Canidae I remembered feeding before. After a month, I decided to give up on the food because the dogs were not acclimating, the food was just too greasy, and they continued to have horrible gas. Their coats became dull and brittle, even with the extra fat. The ingredients list is okay, but it didn't seem to translate into performing well for any of my dogs. When I managed a kennel, we fed this to all of the boarding dogs and I experienced no problems like I experienced with my own, which makes me leery of the quality of the product in the present time. If you decide to feed it, go slow with the changeover from their old food to the new. I did, and it still didn't work for mine. Maybe I have odd dogs, but I have tried them on many foods and never had this level of problems.
