V-8 needs to stick w/juices--this is not their 'bowl of soup'

I wanted to try this because I love Butternut Squash and I also love the original V-8 Juice.  My best friend bought me this flavor and the Broccoli & Cheese.  I was at my office the day she brought them to me.  I was going to work late so I decided I would go to the kitchen and microwave this soup; which by then I was really anticipating.

First things first, the cardboard-like container is difficult to open.  The instructions say to lift flap and snip corners.  Well, I'm in a kitchen, not at my desk.  I don't have scissors to "snip" the flap so I grab the next best thing--a steak knife.  Did I tell you it was a sharp knife and that I am accident prone?  Can you see what's coming?  Well, I'm trying to carve the flap open and the knife slips and cuts my thumb.  I have to tend to that while I'm thinking, "I should have gone back to my desk for some scissors."

Next on my list for "trying new things".  When it is a new food or beverage product I always smell it.  Well, this smelled like baby food and it was thick enough to look like strained squash.  Okay, I can still deal with it so far so I proceed to pour it into a standard soup bowl and it fills the bowl to the rim.  Thus, a nice individual serving size--not too much and not so little that it leaves you hungry.  I believe you have to microwave it for about 3-4 minutes.  I have the other ones at the office so I can't look at the package.  When you open the microwave it does smell good.

At first bite or spoonful I wasn't really sure if I liked the product but it wasn't bad enough to repulse me so I went back to my office and proceeded to eat and work.  As the soup cooled I realized I didn't have the patience to use a spoon so I just drank the soup.  I finished the entire bowl and thought it was okay.

I'm not sure what I thought about the taste.  It definitely didn't taste like the homemade butternut squash I have had in the past.  I think my mind was playing a psychological game on me because I couldn't get past the thought that this smelled like a junior level baby food.  I even told my best friend that when I called her to tell her I tried it.  The butternut squash didn't stand out as much as I thought it would.  I kept thinking there was more of a potato or corn like flavor to it.  Perhaps that was some of the other vegetables put in the recipe.

I love to eat soup in the winter time.  Honestly, I will not be buying this soup for myself.  I will finish off the ones my best friend gave me and if she ever gives me anymore I will eat it.  I know the containers cost about $2.79 a box--just a little steep for a single girl on a tight budget.  I might be tempted to buy it if they ever had a really good sale but it would have to be a great deal.  I'll stick with my Campbell's Chunky Chicken and Dumplings and my Chef Boyardee varieties.

If you are a connoisseur of fine foods, then this is not the soup for you.   V-8 needs to stick with the juices and forget trying to make the right soup.  Their products should be served in a glass not a bowl.

I think someone has used them as a starter soup. They were plenty good for me but I just don't want to fork out the money for them. I still have some at my office, compliments from my best friend ;+)

Thanks for the heads up. I have seen these in the stores and was wondering if they were good on their own or if they would make good starter soups.

Thank you for your review. I saw the commercial for these & had wanted to try it, but now I think I will pass. Like you if it doesn't smell good then I probablly wont like it. I think I will just stick with Cup o'soup or Chunkys LOL.

I'm glad I read your review. I almost bought the butternut squash. Trusting your judgement, I'll save my money. Thanx so much.

I've thought about trying these and have picked them up in the grocery store several times, but always put them back on the shelf. I'm glad I did. LOL!! Sorry to hear about you cutting your finger. Hope it gets better.

You probably had the Campbell's select. It came out about 2 years ago and is also sold in the carton. I wanted to try it but wasn't going to pay $2.79 for a little box of soup.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I think I tried some Butternut Squash soup which also came in a box made by Campbell's. It was supposed to be some kind of fancy "gourmet" soups -- don't know about THAT, but it wasn't bad.

You made a food review so entertaining. With the price of this I don't think we'll be trying it any time soon. Shelton's mother makes really good homemade butternut squash soup around Thanksgiving. I tried to make it once and the children hated it so we stick with grammy's.
