I was looking so forward to trying this soup. First of all, I love Butternut Squash, and 2nd of all, V8 has a good reputation. I truly assumed this would be a healthy and flavorful soup. Wrong on both counts.

I've only tried the Butternut Squash flavor, so I don't know if any of the others are any better. Five flavors available are: Golden Butternut Squash, Garden Broccoli, Tomato Herb, Southwestern Corn and Sweet Red Pepper.

This Butternut Squash tastes like a very bland potato soup with baby-food sized pieces of potatoes in the puree. I ended up adding my own seasonings... and when that didn't do the trick... I added (believe-it-or-not) soy sauce. Nothing was able to salvage this soup. Besides, if I wanted potato soup, then that's what I would have purchased.

There is another brand (can't think of the name off-hand) of boxed butternut squash that is absolutely delicious. The Campbell's V8 was nowhere even close in texture or flavor.

It is a boxed soup which you have to cut open with scissors... pain-in-the-buttocks. The other brand I've tried has an easy-open flip lid.

There is also some predominant flavor that I don't care for. I can't pinpoint what it is, but it has sort of a bright tanginess that is overpowering.

Being V8 is says it has a full serving of vegetables, which is great. However, there are several other unnecessary ingredients listed. Usually I read ingredient labels beforeĀ I buy products, but failed to do beforehand on this one. Some of the ingredients listed are: sugar, cream (milk), food starch, yeast extract, butter, maltodextrin, corn oil, cornstarch, etc...It also claims to be 100% VEGETARIAN (all capital letters on the box). But for those who have dairy allergies beware. Oh, it also has a very high sodium content of 31%.

If you are a parent who is okay with the ingredients, and you have kid's that like bland flavors, then you might like it. But, I was disappointed enough that I don't think I'll even take a chance on the other flavors offered.

I truly wonder how this soup was deemed marketable by whatever executives did the original 'taste test', LOL!

The name sounds delicious and different--glad I read your review before trying it! I can't pass it up now with a smile on my face

(LOL... This variety is good for babies--from soup to poop!)

I haven't tried Campbell's Select. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks :)

Thanks, the soup was definitely disappointing.

I have never bought this but wondered if it was good. Good review.

Believe it or not one of the other good varieties is manufactured by the same company under a different label. Campbell's is the mother company of V-8. Look for Campbell's Select (it might be Golden Select). They are also the boxed soups and one comes in the butternut squash and it is a lot better.

This variety is good for babies--from soup to poop!

I bet they taste great! Unfortuneately we don't have Whole Foods or Trader Joes anywhere near the where I live. I've been to both stores while visiting other places, so I know what great options they'd be in this area. Thanks :)

Great review...it's more expensive but you might want to try Whole Foods or Trader Joes. They Butternut Squash is yummy.

Exactly!

I love squash soup and want it to taste like squah soup. Too bad what they did to this one. If they're using ingredients like cream (milk) and butter, how the heck can they get away with saying it's 100% VEGETARIAN????!!!!!! Thanks for the review.

Yeah, bummer, right?

I just did a google search to try to find one of the other brands I've liked. I found a site for Pacific Natural Foods. That might be the brand I liked. I'm going to have to go get some to find out for sure.

LOL... don't knock it til you try it ;-}

Not this brand, of course, but I have had the the most delicious and savory of butternut squash soups before. I'm going to have to go shopping and find one of the other brands I've enjoyed... mmm mmm good! Then, I'll dare you to give it a try :)

PattyTherre wrote on Oct 16, 2008 at 12:29AM

I'm so glad I read this. I adore butternut squash and intended to buy some of this. What a bummer.

Well, I never heard of squash soup before so I'm not surprised you didn't enjoy it. ;>
