Ever since I was actually a kid (younger I mean...lol) the familiar red and white cans of Campbell's have been close by. I enjoy many different varieties but my all time favorite has to be Oyster Stew. Now nothing takes the place of fresh but Campbell's has come close enough in a pinch.

Campbell's Oyster Stew

I will admit that there have been times when I just didn't feel like cooking but I knew I had to eat something. Here the past few months I have been opening a lot of cans, eating PB & J or even a tomato sandwich or two. I know not very healthy but better than nothing I always say.

Easy to fix is just right these days, so it works for me. I just pop the top off the Oyster Stew and dump it in a saucepan and start heating it up. Now perhaps I do it different than others but I like mine a little stronger than most. After it heats for a minute or two I add only 3/4 of a can of 2% milk, some black pepper and a dash of garlic.

The stock is pretty good and very close to home made and the only drawback is the oysters are a bit overcooked for my taste. I prefer them with a bit more firmness than you get from a can. Since fresh oysters are not available year round Campbell's is nice to have around.

Nutritional Facts

A 10 1/2 ounce can (when mixed with a can of milk) constitutes 2 1/2 servings (My buddy Anna knows first hand that this doesn't really work out...lol) So here is what each serving contains...

Calories 80, Total Fat 6g, Saturated Fat 3.5g, Cholesterol 20mg, Sodium 910mg, Total Carbs 5g, Protein 2g and Iron 10% D.V.

Now I am not a small guy and saying that I have to multiply all of the above by 2.5...Yep I eat the whole can!!!

Bottom Line

Now I know they add salt to help the shelf life but this just seems a tad high to me. I have fixed Oyster Stew many times and I never add salt and I don't use crackers and mine tastes just fine. To me seafood needs only a few seasonings and salt isn't on my list...lol That being said I still think Campbell's Oyster Stew is worth a try and since I now only eat once a day sometimes it works for me. The taste is pretty high up there but the high sodium content means I need to knock it back 1 star.

I like to switch between the oyster stew and clam chowder during the winter......tastes even better sitting in front of the fireplace...;)

I never knew they had oyster stew...it's getting colder out there so this will be one of my tries!

Hanging in there Anna and you're welcome on the mention.......I have experimented a little with it by adding garlic or a dab of hot sauce but not tried sherry yet. I also like to brown some onion and toss it in there sometimes. I prefer homemade because the oysters don't get overcooked but this is still a decent meal for me. ;)

HEY, RON -- How's my Bud? Gee, I didn't even know Campbell's made Oyster Stew! Maybe I'll give it a try. My grandfather watched a cooking show on television years ago and made his own oyster stew. I wasn't there to taste it but my aunt said it was pretty good and they ended up with so much that even the dog got to taste it!!!! I'll have to try this and thanks for that honorary mention. Those serving sizes aren't very realistic in my book, not if the stuff is really good. I wonder how a little slug of cooking sherry would taste in this? Well, have a good day and hope you open up something else good for supper tonight!

A lot of prepared food has too much salt. Hope you're feeling better, bud! ;>
