Caltrate Calcium with Vitamin D -Tablets —

I dropped in to Dr. Forbes' office yesterday for a check-up and this time we rehauled and updated my medical records.  To facilitate this, Dr. Forbes had asked me to bring my medications in so she could check them again.  Usually in a case like this, I just bring in prescription meds but this time I took "the works", even including painkillers and vitamin supplements.  BINGO!  One careful, considered look at that GNC Calcium and Vitamin D supplement I reviewed a few weeks ago and Dr. Forbes suggested something else.  She said that someone who is taking Arimidex (or anybody else especially concerned about bone health) could do better than the GNC product.  Among her across-the-counter suggestions was Caltrate 600+D Plus Minerals Calcium Supplement.  Today I picked up a bottle of 60 tablets at Walgreen's for a little more than $8.00.

STATS:

When comparing the GNC product and Caltrate 600+D Plus supplements, once again the language on the label becomes important.  Stats are given for each single serving but GNC considers a "single serving" to be four whopper tablets gulped down during the course of a day whereas Caltrate considers a single serving to be ONE more moderately sized tablet.  All you have to do is take one other Caltrate tablet to get a double dose of benefits.

A single serving (one tablet) of Caltrate 600+D Plus provides 600 mg. Calcium, 400 IU Vitamin D, 50 mg. Magnesium, 7.5 mg. Zinc, one mg. Copper, 1.8 mg. Manganese and 250 mcg Boron -- a combination of elements which enhances the body's absorption of Calcium and also is beneficial to colon health.  Double up with two single servings (tablets) for the day and you end up with exactly what Dr. Forbes recommended for me -- 1,200 mg. Calcium and 800 IU Vitamin D

By comparison, a single serving (four tablets) of GNC provides a total for the whole day of only 800 mg. Calcium and 200 IU Vitamin D.   Sometimes, every mg. and IU counts!

MY VIEWPOINT:

There have been times in my dealings with doctors when it really did almost take a brick wall falling on me to get me to see the light but this wasn't one of those times.  Caltrate 600+D Plus is cheaper than GNC and easier to swallow, in more ways than one.

I have been a member there for over a year and I get obsessed then sick of it then go back and then burn out. lol. It's time consuming when I'm in my obsessed stage.

Thanks, Patty! SAY, that Twitter thing is getting to be habit-forming, huh? Especially now that more of us are on it. I still like ViewPoints better but I find myself checking Twitter several times a day.

I see my doctor this month and will discuss it. I have been lucky. I did break a back tooth though in December. But it was an old filling. Otherwise, so far so good. Fingers crossed for my bones and teeth,

Good review, Anna. Glad you found something that works better for you. Right now I take more calcium because I'm in the early stages of osteoporosis. Ironically, I also have bone spurs from times when I had too much calcium when I was younger , now not enough. I've been trying liquid caps of calcium and do already sometimes feel a difference. Calcium is important for everyone but we women have to really pay attention to it!

I'll pray for you and your bones, Patty -- I'm very sympathetic. I am not happy that my teeth are more fragile than they used to be also. Dr. Forbes gave a big thumbs up to the Caltrate stuff. It also came in fruit chewables!

I need to talk to my doctor about calcium. Since I am Vitamin D deficient (Well, I was, I take a whopping 4000 IU's now), I am at risk for calcium loss and softer bones. I hate taking pills all day long so this one sounds like an easy one to remember to take.

We all probably need more calcium. I don't drink enough milk, so I probably should use something like this. Thanks!

Doesn't it seem more reassuring when a doctor recommends a specific product? I have just the opposite problem. Instead of less bone density I get an overabundance of Calcium and get calcium deposits on my spine. I have to be careful to not consume too much calcium.
