I'm not quite sure whatever happened to the national "Do Not Call" list but apparently that protective measure is just not measuring up anymore -- I have been getting CALLS and not just from charities or businesses that I am already associated with. All KINDS of people are suddenly calling, including one outfit hailing from 972-428-5200, in Texas. Of course, all I have to do is avoid the call when the number surfaces but it is still annoying to have to stop what I'm doing and check out the caller i.d. only to find that it isn't a call I want to take.
I was getting annoyed and so the other day I started picking up to see who these people were and what was going on. They never would identify themselves or what company they were calling from but they said they wanted to check out what I was paying for credit card rates and see if they could get me a better deal. I politely declined and they stepped up the pace. By this time, I was too angry to just dodge the call and frankly I wanted to find out more about them. It was a little offputting to deal with a telemarketer who not only wanted to sell me something but also seemed determined to come to my home. In the pursuit of this issue, they were very aggressive -- trying to check out my address and arrange an appointed time for me to let them into my home and "look at my credit cards." One day I was thinking about all this and typed 972-428-5200 into my search engine, not expecting much. Imagine my surprise when I was suddenly catapulted into a website called CallerComplaints.com,
This website seems to be a clearinghouse for ... well ... caller complaints. A person who is being pestered by an unknown entity can look up that caller's number in CallerComplaints.com and file a complaint of his or her own. It was comforting to be able to have my say and to read about the experiences of other people. It seems that nobody knows who these Texas people are nor even what business they are really in but they have phoned a lot of people -- sometimes one or two times every day and at weird hours. Their "spiel" varies but as often as not someone at the other end hangs up without saying a word if the phone call is answered.
MY VIEWPOINT:
What this all boils down to is a double dose of advice: whatever you do, dodge any calls coming in from 972-428-5200 and by all means check out what is going on over at CallerComplaints.com. If the "Do Not Call" registry is really dead in the water, then CallerComplaints.com may be an idea whose time has come.
