When Anna Marie Duke was seven one of her managers said "This is what we have decided, Anna Marie is dead. You are now Patty." This was the start of a ten year nightmare where her managers, John and Ethel Ross, gradually took over her entire life. With a mentally ill mother and an alchoholic father, it was a simple matter to have Anna move in with them so as to control every aspect of both her public and private life. This continued until the age of seventeen when things came to a head finally resulting in her breaking free. Then a longer and worse nightmare began until, in her thirties, Patty Duke was diagnosed manic-depressive. The true story of her survival makes her autobiography a powerful and compelling read. This book is highly recommended to people who enjoy non-fiction, fans of Patty Duke, those who would like to learn more about mental illness, as well as everyone else.

This sounds like an excellent book! Patty Duke used to have a relative who lived in Oak Park and sometimes she would come here to visit.

I like biographies, too. Getting ready to read Steve Martin's. Nice job!
