Chantix REALLY works to help you quit smoking. Notice, I said to help you quit. I do consider this a "magic" pill, but you have to do your part, too.
I wasn't 100% on-board to quit smoking. I had already tried to quit 6 times before. I tried cold-turkey, Wellbutrin, and nicotine gum. Each time I attempted to quit, by the third day, I was back to smoking.
If you have ever tried to quit smoking, you know the side effects. It becomes unbearable.
I am a parent of a small child and smoked for well over 12 years. Don't sit here and tell yourself that you have smoked for 40 so it won't work for you. BS.
After carrying around my prescription for Chantix for nearly 2 months, a friend of mine finally talked me into filling it. I did and then waited another 2 or 3 weeks before actually beginning treatment.
The greatest part about Chantix is that you can continue to smoke during your first week of treatment. I cheated and continued to smoke for several days after that as well! But, hey, I haven't smoked in over 11 months now!
At some point during treatment you will have to pick a day and say that will be your last cigarette - and mean it. I waited until I had a really good last drag so I can always remember that!
VERY IMPORTANT: The medication does tend to make you nauseous. If isn't making you nauseous, then you probably need to up your dosage. (Obviously, talk with your family doctor, first.) I have known several people to try Chantix. What I have realized is, it is that "sick" feeling that causes the medication to work properly. That is why it works and why you ultimately become a non-smoker. DO NOT take anti-nausea meds. I have seen people whose doctors prescribed the anti-nauseous medication to them. Guess what? They claim the pills did nothing for them and are still smoking to this day.
You will have crazy dreams and you will get urges every now and then. But, the urge will pass within just a few minutes. Not an overwhelmingly urge like cold-turkey!
WORDS OF ADVICE: You need to remove your 3 biggest triggers from your life - don't get scared - it's only temporary! You may not know what your triggers are until you actually stop smoking. For me, my biggest triggers were coffee, the newspaper and the telephone. So for over a month, I quit reading the paper, talking on the phone and drinking coffee.
GOOD LUCK! And you don't even need it because Chantix WORKS! (One of my family members who smoked two packs a day for nearly 20 years and two of my friends quit, too!)
If we can do it - YOU can do it!
