Chantix sounds like the perfect solution for those who want to quit smoking but can't seem to manage it. Some studies indicate that smoking is more addictive than heroin. Well, I guess it's a little more socially acceptable, so that may be the reason.
The idea with Chantix is that that it gets in your brain and attaches to the receptors that give you pleasure from cigarettes, so you just don't get the nicotene kick after a week on Chantix. That, then, makes it easier to quit. You're not hooked on cigarettes or nicotene - buy maybe to the Chantix. Who knows? This stuff hasn't been out long.
Chantix claims a 44% success rate after 12 weeks. That's while taking the drug. If you do the research, then the rate drops once the drug is eliminated down to about 22% or about the same at the patch. In other words, you have, at best, a one in four or less chance of getting off cigarettes with Chantrix and at a cost that is staggering. Expect to pay at least $600 for three months of this stuff.
The high rate of success was with trail groups who had counseling and support. They try to build that in with daily phone calls and emails - also daily. These are not, of course, personal. You get canned emails and recorded calls. One things more annoying than a telemarketer call is a Chantrix call telling you that if you (I) slipped, just don't give up. That's just enough to push my buttons enough to make me light up.
There emails are all about setting a date and telling friends and so on. I am a more privatge person, and that rah-rah crap hurt way more than it helped.
The cheer-leading assistance could be ignored, but the side effects were really the kicker. Yeah. Drugs have side effects. This is a drug. They downplayed this stuff to start with until forced by the FDA to note some of the problems. You may vomit or have vivid nighmares or get majorly depressed even if you've never had problems with that. Someone sued them when her husband committed suicide while on Chantrix. Smoking may be bad and deadly in the long run but it's not instant at least.
I've had a horrible schedule the last few weeks, but I did have awful nightmares with Chantrix. I am still not sleeping well and not a full night in a couple of months now. That may not all be related to Chantrix, but it sure did not help to have dreams so vivid that my covers were jumbled up like I'd been in a street fight during the night.
Chantrix makes you sleep too, or it did me. That could be the sleeping thing. In any case, it was hard to concentrate enough to put a stamp on a letter.
I managed two weeks. Chantrix did not reduce my urge to smoke. It did wreck my sleep. And, it cost a bundle.
I'm glad it works for maybe 22% of people, and I would love to see a 2 or 3 year follow up on that.
Patches peel my skin off. Gum gives me hiccups that are so massive I can't even talk. This Chantrix messes with my head. I quit cold turkey before and started back when a love one committed suicide. I guess I'll do it cold turkey again but not right at the moment. Trust me. This is not a good time to tip my scales on anything.
Check out some Chantrix research here (and wish I had):
There's a lot of research out there, but the links won't work here. Check out Chantrix and problems and issues etc. on Google.
