Being green doesn't just mean using organic products, driving a hybrid or recycling it is also about saving energy. I have been doing my part with trying to use organic products around my yard and I recycle aluminum cans. Then I got greener on a trip to Home Depot last year when I spied a big sale on CFL's all of them were 30% off so I figured I would try some and see how the worked.

The true test

Anyone that has played billiards knows you have to have not only good lighting but also no shadows when your trying to aim. Now my family room has a sloped ceiling so a normal billiard light was not an option and besides I like my ceiling fan. It is a 4 light setup so I got 4 CFL's for it, 2 for the computer room and 3 more for the bathrooms. They are all 40 watt CFL's and are actually quite bright.

I put these in the family room and broke out the old cue stick to test them out. They take about 15 seconds or so to get to their brightest but after that they are great. I now have nice bright light to play pool and I am being green over the green (little billiard humor there, actually my felt is blue...lol) Plus with 4 CFL's I have no shadows to inhibit my skillful shots (more pool humor..lol my wife kicks my butt!)

In the bathrooms work very well and provide good illumination, same for the computer room. We already have 4' Florescent lights in the kitchen so I was a little green before I started. The thing is I am saving electricity and that saves me money and also saves a the power company from having to produce so much. That makes me feel good because I never considered myself as a conservationist, but it feels good doing my part.

Bottom Line

It doesn't cost a lot of money to be green and it saves you money in the long run. CFL's are environmentally friendly as they save electricity, they last a long time and are bright. Plus they don't produce all the heat that a regular bulb does, thus keeping your house cooler in the heat of summer. In my opinion you can't go wrong by going Green!

In response to mrkstvns's comment from Jan 17, 2008 at 8:29AM:

yes they do lack in the dimmer aspect. The color really doesn't bother me though guess I have gotten used to lighting of CFL's ;-)

Some people complain that the light from a CFL is greener, and not as "warm" as the yellower incandescent light. Personally, I'd use CFLs everywhere if it weren't for their problems handling dimmer switches...
