I was pleasantly surprised when I used flourescent lightbulbs, I thought they were a bit poor in their lighting ability, but about 2 minutes later I realized they just had to 'warm up' and lighted wonderfully. We have a pole lamp, and it did require us to remove the attachement piece so the bulb would fit...and easy fix.
