You have a bunch of people coming over for a pool party/cookout do you just throw some burgers and dogs on the grill or do you go for a memorable meal? Well I like the memorable meals myself, life is just too short to play it safe. So I get a combination of flavors going.....It may be pork chops, brisket, burgers or chicken but they are not a meal by themselves....Nope being part German, Irish and a natural born Redneck I was brought up to believe that when you invite people over you treat them like royalty!

Bush's Original Baked Beans

I am not one to open a can, throw it in a pot and just heat it up....I don't like bland food! So for the perfect cookout I put 2 cans of Bush's Baked Beans in my thick sturdy aluminum pot and the I get to fixin the Fixins! First ya chop a bunch of green onions, green peppers, red peppers and 1 or 2 jalapeno peppers and saute them in a bit of bacon fat. When done ya toss them in the pot with the beans and add 1/2 cup of brown sugar and give it a good stir.

Now put it in your smoker grill with your meat (whatever your smokin for your guests) and let it simmer! Bush's Baked beans are sturdy beans and will hold up to the extra cooking time. They slow smoke and when done will disappear faster than a $5 bill laying on the floor at Walmart!

Bottom Line

I know I add extras to mine but being raised in the country with a German Mom made me appreciate Great Food! Sure they are good right out of the can but that is how they made them, I won't serve anything that doesn't have my signature on it to my family or guests! Once you taste beans that have been cooked on an open fire with some nice hickory or mesquite smoke injection you will never go back to just heated up beans!

I use other kinds too but I catch these on sale a lot so I stock up on them. I like to add Jack Daniel's to mine sometimes, gives them a very nice flavor but I run out of Jack if I do it too often ;)

BubleFan1 wrote on Jun 6, 2008 at 8:12AM

These are our favorites too! We just had the bourbon and brown sugar ones the other day and they are the best I've ever had!!! Once you try Bush Beans you won't go back to any other! :-)

I could live on them for a long time and not tire of them, there are so many ways to fix them. My son just polished off the batch I fixed yesterday ;(....Time to make more....;)

I have yet to smoke black eyed peas but I bet they would hold up great under the smoke! ;)

In response to RudiXeno's comment from Jun 5, 2008 at 3:29PM:

True about the brown sugar but I have found it tames the jalapeño a bit for some and smoking the brown sugar absorbs a bit of the hickory or mesquite a bit better. I love the hot but the rest of the family is not as big a fan, it was for them I added the extra brown sugar...........Health Food Lovers Unite! ;)

Actually Bush's beans are a female family members recipe, I believe it was the Great Aunt of the founders. ;)

Not weird at all to add beer to beans, I haven't done it with premade beans but I have with my beans from scratch. ;)

LoveisJoy wrote on Jun 5, 2008 at 6:45PM

Serious yum! I could eat them cold out of the can, but it's always better to doctor them up. I haven't tried them the way you describe--it's making my mouth water! LOL

GeorgeChabot wrote on Jun 5, 2008 at 4:10PM

I haven't had some decent baked beans in a coon's age. Sounds like a good recipe. We used to put pancake syrup in them. Course we do have black eyed peas, y'all. ;>

RudiXeno wrote on Jun 5, 2008 at 3:29PM

I leave out the 1/2 cup of brown sugar, since I think they're sweet enough. Other than that we seem to doctor our beans in a similar manner. Ah, the joys of health food! Rudi

LaurieM wrote on Jun 5, 2008 at 3:28PM

We have Grandma Brown's Baked Beans here. I have never tried Bush's although I have heard good things about it.

williampinn wrote on Jun 5, 2008 at 3:13PM

Yum! Didn't you just make chilli with them beans?

AnnaBanana wrote on Jun 5, 2008 at 2:24PM

Boy, do these sound good or what, especially the way you fix them. As it happens, I think I have a couple cans of Bush's beans here now, lurking in my kitchen. Sometimes I add a dash of beer when I am cooking beans. Sounds wierd, tastes great!
