These aren't Mom's baked beans. But, that's her baking dish.

Bush's Original Baked Beans (brown sugar and bacon) —

I thought I would take a short cut and buy Bush's Baked Beans. The can was Original with bacon and brown sugar. Those are some of the things I put in mine, so I thought I could pull that off.

To be honest, the beans were quite good. I was thinking to rate average, but they are above average for canned baked beans. I've had some that made me say, "Are you SURE these are baked beans?" Bush's are quality, but they just aren't mine.

See, I doctor up some baked beans. I add things like bacon (which you can actually find - unlike in Bush's), hamburger or sometimes weiners. I don't put all those meats in the same batch, but I usually add some meat. I do put in some brown sugar but also some ketchup, mustard, and sometimes hot sauce. My beans could be the main dish, though we eat them on the side with grilled food usually.

If I had to go with canned baked beans and could not fix them up, then I'd go with Bush's. The flavor is pleasant. They just aren't killer baked beans like I'm used to.

Yes. Everyone did notice. When the family gets used to fancy baked beans, then canned ones without any extras don't fly that high. The guys were good sports, but I won't try to fool them again. It doesn't take that long to make great baked beans, so we won't settle for average again. Well, if we do, I won't put them in my usual baked bean pan, and I'll pretend like I don't know where they came from.

I'm a total foodie and I have been using Bush's for years. I throw in ground sirloin, bacon, a can of pineapple salsa, brown sugar, ketchup and top it with french fried onions. Bake them for 45 min. on 350 and it will be the first thing gone. Make sure to get on the treadmill afterwards and plan on walking/running for a while....these definitely aren't figure friendly.

They aren't as good as the ones I used to eat from Blackwelder's Barbecue in Salisbury, NC but they are so close I don't mind. Really missing that sliced and chopped barbecue with the sides of cole slaw and hushpuppies, though. Is that still available in eastern NC?

Oh, great review.

If you don't doctor them up, then there is no comparison. Trust me on that. Homemade baked beans are like steak is to hamburger. Both good. BUt, hey steak is steak.

I used to eat only Campbells beans until I tried Bush's. Now it's only Bush's, but maybe I'll get to try yours someday.
