Burt's Bees Lip Shimmers —
As a makeup artist, I am constantly using products that are geared toward all kinds of high performance. I have used some of the most beautiful lip products, and lots of not so nice ones.However, now and then, I like to run to our rural grocery store clad in old pants, messy hair, and little or no makeup. On those days, especially in the summer, I like to have a quick and easy lipcolor to put on that also doubles as a moisturizer.
I also am a natural foods and living enthusiast so I prefer to have more natural cosmetics for every day use whenever possible.
WHAT ARE THE LIP SHIMMERS LIKE?
BURTS BEES LIP SHIMMERS seemed to be the perfect answer to this problem. It comes in a very small tube- only 2.6g (.0975oz). The product screws up from the bottom and has a tight fitting cap on it.
The tube of BURTS BEES LIP SHIMMERS resembles a half size tube of lip balm- it is very thin- almost pencil size. The cap and bottom knob which screws up the product is the color of the product inside.
The product itself is a pretty decently pigmented lip balm with shimmery pigment. It is very straightforward color- no frills or depth to speak of.
When you apply this balm/lipcolor the first impression is like putting peppermint oil on the lips. It tingles and has a cool minty feeling which lasts for quite a while. I do not find this annoying at all, but some people who do not like mint could find this annoying.
HOW WELL DOES BURTS BEES LIP SHIMMER PERFORM?
I have four colors of BURTS BEES LIP SHIMMERS.
CHAMPAGNE: Icy white/pink shimmer
WATERMELON: Pastel baby pink
RHUBARB: slightly darker pink than watermelon with less shimmer
RAISIN: light brick red- translucent
Each of these applies to the lips sheerly. The coverages is very light. They do need to be reapplied pretty often to keep the color even, and although they do moisturize the lips, the mica in them tends to dry them out at the same time.
INGREDIENTS
I won't usually list ingredients on most cosmetics unless there is something of interest, but in this case, this product claims to be all natural.
Ingredients: helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, beeswax, euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, lanolin, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, tocopheryl acetate, tocopherol, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf oil. May contain: iron oxide, mica, carmine, titanium dioxide
FINAL COMMENTS
Although I enjoy wearing BURTS BEES LIP SHIMMERS (don't confuse these with the RADIANCE LIP SHIMMERS which are a different product), I find that I only reach for them once in a great while- usually in the summertime.
The reason that I do not tend to reach for these as often is because they tend to make my lips dry and peel more than normal which is annoying. The next day after wearing them, it is not unusual to have my lips peel in large sheets of skin, something that makes it difficult to wear this balm very often.
There are other products out there that do make my lips not peel as easily and moisturize and I tend to reach for those more often.
However, now and then, I reach for my CHAMPAGNE or WATERMELON LIP SHIMMER the most often when I want just a quick touch of gloss and don't want a high maintenance look- and I don't mind if my lips peel the next day.
For $4 which is the going price locally, I would rather wait for LOREAL COLOUR JUICE to go on sale for Buy One Get One Free which makes them about the same price.
