Burt's Bees Honey Lip Balm —

"OH YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS LIP BALM!"

My mother so rarely gets this excited about a beauty product that I perked up immediately.

"What is it?"

She leaned in closer to share her exciting discovery.

"It is this new BURTS BEES HONEY LIP BALM! It is FABULOUS stuff- you can taste a little burst of honey in it and it is so moisturizing and wonderful- I only have to apply it once a day - twice at most. This stuff is WONDERFUL. You have to try it."

Okay, now, as I said, my mother rarely gets excited about any beauty product so I decided that this had to be very good stuff for her to get this wound up about it.

That week I went to the local CVS and purchased a BURTS BEES HONEY LIP BALM. I could not wait to try it- as I love honey.

I quickly opened the box and put on the balm expecting the burst of honey at any moment......

Instead, I got a mouth full of.....BABY POWDER????

WHAT???

I almost regurgitated my lunch.

I quickly wiped off my mouth and reapplied.

THAT was a mistake. The effect was much worse the second time.

I managed to keep myself from succumbing to the nausea that was engulfing my being, but I could not get this horrible taste/smell off of my lips no matter WHAT I did.

Once it wore off, I took it back to the store. They let me get a different one, but the results were the same.

Finally I took it to a different CVS hoping to get a better batch.

More Baby Powder Mouth.

Then I tried buying this at a totally different store which is known for fresh stock and LOTS of it. They literally had like 30 cases of this stuff all over the store.

Thankfully I got a customer service girl that was willing to work with me on this, and when I asked her if I was being ridiculous, she smelled the stuff and almost threw it while saying, "Baby Powder Lip gloss?"

I felt vindicated.

Long story short, I went through about 35 tubes of this stuff and finally resigned myself to wondering if my mother's taste buds had died. I interviewed strangers everywhere just to see if they reacted like I did when smelling it (I did not tell them good or bad, I just asked their opinion). Almost every person recoiled when smelling the tube knowing it was a lip gloss and did not smell like one should.

My mother was very upset about this whole affair, insisting that this stuff was wonderful. I was wondering if she was off her rocker.

At last, she bought me one in the town where she lives and I was shocked- it was WONDERFUL!

So, this review, is going to have to be a dual review. One section for bad ones, and one section for good ones!

COMMON FEATURES OF ALL BURTS BEES HONEY BALM

The come in a box or in a display with just the tube singly. The tube is an amber colored tube clearly labeled. There is .15oz (4.25g) of product in the tube, which is like a standard lip balm tube, which screws up from a bottom knob.

The product is very moisturizing, emollient, and does not have to be reapplied as often as most lip balms.

IF YOU GET A GOOD ONE

The texture of this balm is knobby. It is like balls of bees wax are in it, and the fragrance is of beeswax and honey. The color is creamy beeswax color.

IF YOU GET A BAD ONE

The texture is smoother and the product goes on smoothly. The fragrance, however, is like someone dumped a container of baby powder in it. It is very repulsive for a lip balm. It is hard to get it off the lips once it is on.

INGREDIENTS

Because this claims to be all natural, I am posting ingredients for those who are concerned about possible irritants.

Ingredients: beeswax, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, lanolin, symphytum officinale (comfrey) root extract, flavor, honey, tocopheryl acetate, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, tocopherol

CLOSING COMMENTS

I went through a lot to get a good one of these balms. I should never have gone through this much for a stupid $3 lip balm. BURTS BEES needs to get some serious quality control going on this stuff.

I would highly recommend that you remove the cap of each one before you buy, or if that is not possible, do it before you leave the parking lot of the store- and make sure that you can get a refund if it is not the good one.
