My daughter gave me some Burt's Bees products for my birthday. Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm and another product came on a stuffed animal which I'll talk about in a moment.

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm has its pros and cons:

Pros

  • It's not tested on animals
  • Nice ingredients including coconut oil, sweet almond oil, ultra-emollient lanolin, sunflower oil, and peppermint oil
  • It's a nice moisturizer which we are told is sealed in by the beeswax.
  • The yellow tin can be used for other things (pennies?) and can be recycled.
  • It can be applied as often as I want.
Cons

  • The price - At about $3.00 for a 3 ounce tin that's three times what you pay for others; however, the others probably will be tested on animals.
  • There is no sunscreen in Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm.
  • I concur with other reviews I've read. The tin is hard to open. If you have any problems like arthritis you do not want to buy this!
  • It has to be used with my finger which should be clean and it then gets under my nails...

 Neighter a Pro or Con

  • The smell - it's not yummy; it isn't bad. I think the peppermint comes through the most but on my lips I can't taste it.
How do I rate this? Well I guess considering there is a much easier Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm that comes in a tube I would recommend that over the tin.

Now for the really good part: My daughter bought the Burt's Bees products at Target. They were attached to a small stuffed animal whose design was done by two little boys both of whom are residents of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's Target House. There is a story about the boys in the tag including telliing us  that elephants symbolize family.

Target donate's $1.75 to St. Jude for purchasing the two Burt's Bees Beeswax products and the elephant. For this reason I will recommend this purchase.

Good review! My experience with the BB's stick is that it's a little too waxy for repeated applications. This sounds better, and I like the no-animal testing and St. Jude's part very much.

Sounds like a bargain in the end. Everyone wins.

A tip to anyone dipping into a tub of lip stuff with their finger . . . Don't use your fingertip, but instead run the top part of your nail into the balm, then put that little glob onto another finger tip. With some practice you can do this using just 2 fingers - dipping with your pointer finger, then using your middle finger to slide it off and onto your lips. Perfect!

I like Burt's Bees but it's a little pricey and some of the moisturizers are over scented. That's cool that Target is donating to St. Judes. Great review!

In response to GigiandAdonai's comment from Jan 25, 2009 at 9:22AM:

Gigi, I haven't gone to Target as I said it was a gift. It's possible the elephants have different BBs products attached to them.

I'm with Katrena: I thought you were going to say it did a collagen or botox-like enhancement.

I was ready to cry when you got to the elephant part and I would buy this to give money to a good cause. I have met Marla and Danny Thomas at the St. Jude's Children's hospital. It's a wonderful foundation to support.

I don't like the lip balms in containers either because needless to say, the stuff gets under my nails and a little while later I have my index finger in my mouth and yuck--I also get the lip balm.

I have heard so much about Burt's Bees that I think I will go out and get some--but I will try to get the tube ;+) Great review!! ~Gigi

Burts Bees makes my lips tingly. I like it. Yeah I don't like the tins because of the whole nail fiasco. And it melts and rehardens, not fun.

OK--the title had me going. I wasn't sure if this stuff was going to blow a person up to where they looked like an elephant or what! Nice review. I like the way you set it up and mentioned some personal info and extra info that I didn't know.

I prefer lip balm packaged like Chap Stick. At least you got a nice prize with the purchase!
