While returning from running an errand in Berwyn today, as I approached a bus stop, three things happened all at once: 1) I just missed the northbound 311 (Oak Park Avenue) Bus, 2) it clouded up and looked like it was going to rain and 3) there was a Burger King's which seemed like an inviting port in the storm. Let's hear it for BK for the large, easily legible poster of nutritional information they had hanging on the wall directly next to the entrance. Of course, the insight it provided was pretty much academic since I always break down and order a Whopper with Cheese at a place like this -- it is an almost inevitable knee-jerk reaction type of thing.
This time, however, instead of ordering French Fries, I opted for something I hadn't tried before -- BK Fresh Apple Fries. This treat (obviously geared toward the kiddies) consists of sticks cut from freshly peeled apples which are fashioned and colored to look exactly like real fries. Although I would have preferred a slightly more intense, tart apple flavor, I thought that the Apple Fries were very refreshing and made a lovely light dessert. Also included was a small pouch of caramel sauce which I assume was supposed to be opened and squirted on the Apple Fries in the same manner that ketchup is slathered on real fries. I have no doubt that this would have been delicious but also would have constituted a really unholy, vile mess even in the hands of an adult in the privacy of one's own home so I passed on the caramel sauce (which would have altered the nutritional stats somewhat if used).
STATS:
I was afraid to even look at the 411 info for the Whopper with Cheese which could probably be summed up in three words: Bad, Bad, Bad! Thank God I only get to Burger King once or twice a year! However, the stats for the Fresh Apple Fries were printed right there on their package and we could do a lot worse for a nice little snack at a fast food place. Minus the addition of the caramel sauce, the contents of one package is 25 calories with zero calories from fat. In fact, there is zip zip zero for fat, cholesterol and sodium, with 6 grams Total Carbs, 1 gram Dietary Fiber, 5 grams Sugars, 35% (D.V.) Vitamin C and 4% Calcium.
MY VIEWPOINT:
Three cheers to Burger King for coming up with a light, refreshing option in the fast food arena and I would recommend this to someone who dines out occasionally but I'm lopping two stars off. I mentioned that I don't get to Burger King very often but I have to say that I was shocked at the prices for fast food nowadays. Perhaps for the meal it delivers, it might not be out of place to charge $3.50 for a Whopper with Cheese and I'll even accept the price tag of one dollar for the smallest size cup of pop (which was actually as much as I would have wanted).
What really shocked me was that they were charging $1.49 for two ounces of BK Fresh Apple Fries! The only possible reason for charging this much is that they can. Children probably clamor for this treat now and tired parents hate to deprive their kiddies of something which they love and which is good for them but consider this scenario ... a family with four youngsters would end up having to shell out nearly $6 just for what amounts to 8 oz. of chopped apples. If his Majesty, the Burger King, is reading this review, I hope he is ashamed of himself.
TASTE TIP:
It would be cheaper and probably more appetizing to just cut up some fresh fruit salad and have that waiting for dessert at home after a Burger King meal.
