My brother has fair skin. He's worked as a lifeguard and a camp counselor and tried out all the various sun blocks. He swears by Bullfrog. I haven't seen him burned in years, so I figure Bullfrog is a great sunblock, and that's what I bought for our trip to Florida.
Bullfrog goes on smooth except on hairy people. I am not the hairy person of the family, so I don't have problems with that. With some rubbing it does go on guys just fine too. And, it doesn't smell "funny." It's basically odorless.
The lotion is waterproof and sweat proof. We were out on the beach several hours and didn't have to reapply. It is recommended that the lotion be reapplied after prolonged swimming or vigorous exercise.
At some point, my eyes began to burn. I thought I'd rubbed some Bullfrog in my eyes. I wiped my eyes and splashed some water on my face. It didn't help much.
My eyes began to leak. My nose began to run. I was thinking that the bright, white sand in Florida was really hard on my eyes. I put on dark glasses and borrowed a floppy hat. I could hardly open my eyes, and I couldn't read my book. Oh well. Such is life.
After we left the beach, I said I thought I should get some Visine at CVS.
The lady at CVS wouldn't sell me Visine until I spoke with the pharmacist. This was done in a nice way (-: Back at the pharmacy counter, a young man (20 something) asked me if I was OK. Guys that age don't usually notice. I thought, "I must look bad."
I told the pharmacist that I thought I'd rubbed a bit of lotion in my eyes. I asked if Visine was what I needed.
The pharmacist said, "Honey. You're having an allergic reaction. Do you have a rash or hives?"
I checked the rest of my body - or the parts showing. No rash.
The assistant went and found the Benadryl. The pharmacist said to take that immediately and every four hours. The visine was fine and also some nasal spray to open up my nose and stop the drips. I got some Spree candies for good measure.
My eyes were red and swollen when we got back to the cabin. In fact, most of my face was kind of red and swollen. My eyes hurt pretty bad.
I took a really good shower. Remember, the lotion is waterproof and sweat proof, so it was stuck on. I used a lot of soap to get it all off.
My eyes were still touchy the next day, but I felt better.
The pharmacist said that he saw more reactions to Bullfrog than to any other sunblock. He said that he wished that they would pull it.
It really did work great for the guys. It even kept my skin protected other than where it caused reactions - mostly on the face (not where you want reactions).
Obviously I won't ever use Bullfrog again. The pharmacist said definately not to. I had figured that out anyway.
My advice is to be careful. The reaction to this is not very pleasant or pretty. But, if you don't react to it, it's a great sunblock.
