Buffet Bb Intermediate Clarinet —

I tried one of these, along with two Yamaha 450-CL intermediate clarinets about a year ago on behalf of a student.

The E-11 is Buffet's intermediate model. Buffet has a great reputaion. their pro model R-13 has wide acceptance among US orchestral players.

This instrument promised good sound and more comfortable keywork, achieved at a modest price, around $1,100. I tried it. the instrument is adequate. it does have an adequate sound and keywork. The best part of the keywork is an adjustable thumb, which is usually found only on pro models. The sound was darker and less vibrant, not surprising since the R-13s market is among orchestral players.

I felt like the Yamaha CL-450 had better keywork and sound, although this instrument is adewuate. I also think the leblanc Rapsodie is a better value among intermediate model clarinets.

These are worth trying if a local music store has them in stock. For mail order, the Leblanc Rapsodie is a better value. An aspiring player should also consider a used pro-model instrument, which can sometimes be purchased at very attractive prices.
