In my formative years, you drank one of three beers -- Schlitz, Schaffer or Bud. And it was like Chevy vs. Ford. Bud drinkers didn't mix with Schlitz drinker. If you wanted a change, it was Schaffer -- probably because they sponsored the Red Sox.
I cut my beer teeth on Bud. And when they opened a brewery 1/2 mile down the road, I was hooked. Unfortunately the first batch from the Merrimack brewery tasted like it came right out of the Merrimack River -- and that's when you could walk across to Litchfield without getting your feet wet -- of course your feet and legs would have disintegrated from all the chemicals before you got across.
Anyway that was back in the late 60s & early 70s when Bud was the beer and Boone's Farm & Mateus was our wine. It was a simplier, more innocent, more ignorant time.
My tastes have now matured and grown (along with my waist). Today, I'm a microbrew kind of guy. Give me dark color, hoppy flavor, and uniqueness. Even the bad microbrews are better than the canned yellow water from the big name breweries.
Except for Bud. It still has an appeal and taste that endures. At the ball game or after work, I will always choose Bud over the other bid name brands. It has a nice balanced flavor, not overpowering but with distinction. It is consistent and smooth. As enjoyable after a six pack as after one.
Put on that old time music, rev up the Ford V-8, and kick back with a Bud.
