A month or so before my trip to Seattle, I reserved a rental car through budget.com. I reserved a mid-size vehicle for 9 days and got what I felt like was a good price at about $380. When I got to Seattle and to the Budget desk, I was told I was going to be driving a PT Cruiser. I hate PT Cruisers and, no offense to those of you that love them and own them, I did not want to be seen driving one. I told the woman behind the desk that I had a strong aversion to the PT Cruiser and asked if there was something else available. She told me that for an extra $9 a day I could "upgrade" to a Toyota Corolla. I now sensed that this was some sort of ploy to get me to spend more money. I told her that the Corolla, while it would not make me look like an idiot while I drove it, did not seem to be worthy of a $9 extra fee. I also asked if the PT Cruiser was the only mid-size car the company carried. She then admitted to me that I could have a Mitsubishi Galant for no extra cost. It seems they use the threat of a PT Cruiser to get people to needlessly spend more money.
