After doing a little research on All-in-one printers, I decided that the Brother MFC-420CN USB Printer was best for my small home Office needs.  Its fairly compact, and its capable of producing some amazing photos up to 8x10 (when high quality glossy paper is used with correct printer settings) Also when it comes to ink, it does use multiple cartridges, however unlike its lexmark counterpart they can be bought online from discount ink retailers at a fraction of store prices. My experience with Brother customer support has been exceptional compared to other manuafacturers.****

I REALLY LIKE THIS PRINTER.  IT IS SO COOL AS WE CAN PRINT,FAX,COPY&SCAN.  WE HAVE HAD IT FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS.  I CAN'T SAY WE HAVE ALWAYS LOVE IT AS SOMETIMES THESE PRODUCTS ARE A PAIN.  THEN YOU FINALLY FIGURE IT OUT AND FIX WHAT WAS WRONG.  ALL TECK STUFF IS A PAIN AT TIMES.  THIS IS ONE THAT HAS BEEN THE BEST.  IT IS NICE LOOKING AND IT IS SO MUCH FUN GETTING FAX'S FROM PEOPLE.  I THINK IT IS SO COOL.  AS YOU CAN SEE I AM NOT AN EXPERT ON TECK STUFF.  I AM 71 YEARS OLD SO I CAN REMEMBER THE OLD PHONE ON THE WALL WITH AN OPERATOR ASKING WHAT NO. PLEASE.

THE BROTHERS MFC-420CN IS ONE OF THE BEST ALL-IN-ONE PRINTER I'VE EVER OWN. IT IS EASY TO USE, USES LESS INK THAN OTHER INKJET PRINTERS, FAX AND SCANNING ARE ALSO EASY WITH THE DOCUMENT FEEDER. CHANGING THE INK IS ALSO EASY, BECAUSE THERE ARE 4 INK CARTRIDGES IN THE PRINTER, AND YOU ONLY CHANGE THE COLOR THAT IS EMPTY. ALSO, REFILLING EACH COLOR CARTRIDGE YOURSELF IS VERY SIMPLE AND SAVES A LOT OF MONEY. THE PRINT QUALITY AND SCAN QUALITY OF THIS PRINTER IS ALSO HIGH ON MY LIST OF RATING.   FOR A HOME OFFICE, OR INDIVIDUAL USE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRINTER. HOWEVER, BROTHER HAS REPLACED THIS MODEL WITH THE MFC-490CN INSTEAD.

This printer is very asethetic looking.  it looks very nice and is compact for an all in one.  i like the scanning/copying capabilities from one page on the bed to multiple pages on the top of the scanner.  it scans in wonderful dpi.  im an artist and use this scanner for my smaller projects.  i like that the scanner top comes almost completely off so that some of my larger artwork can be scanned too.  i dont like that i cant figure out how to program the printer so it will scan documents into a pdf file.  maybe it is just me, but it wont let me do this.  all my documents have to be scanned as individual photos of the page.  it prints nice photos, on just about any paper.  i have yet to try the one paper i really want to because im afraid of jamming the printer.  it jammed once on regular card stock so i dont know if it would work.  i use this printer on a daily basis and for the most part it has been a very functional and useful purchase.  i purchased it as a floor display model and it came with nothing, but has still been useful.

I really like my brother all-in-one printer.  I had to replace my old one and this one was inexpensive and so easy to use.  I never could figure out how to use the scanner on my old printer and this one was right there when I turned it on.  You can get inexpensive cartridges on line and they last quite a while.  I never thought of doing photos because I have a photo printer but I think I will try it tonight and see how it works.  It also is smaller and more attractive than my old all-in-one printer.

I don't really print much, I don't scan much and I don't fax much.  So it really makes no sense for me to have a separate device for each function.  I bought the Brother 420 as it seemed the best thing on sale at the store at the time.  My only real concern was that there was linux support.  After hooking the printer up to the network, I installed the drivers and started printing.  It took a little tweaking, but I got there in the end.  Same deal with the scanning.  I'm probably lacking some of the features you get if you use the giant windows app that ships with it, but I'm happy enough.  Like I said, I just needed basic functionality. Cartridges are a little steep in price and it seems to want you to change all of them when any colour gets low.  Seems a little odd and probably a scam to sell more ink.  I found a couple of guides online on how to get around this. When I get a new printer, I won't avoid Brother but I won't go out of my way to buy another one.

It is also a stand alone, printer for printing photos, scanning documents, with a peautiful picture window to show what is being printed or faxed. It has a top load document feeder, and prints well with almost any type paper. Other features, include an adjustable photo feed for any size photo you would want to print, copy or scan.  It also has a front paper load tray.  Just pull out the easy to use paper and photo tray and adjust the easy to use tabs, located in the tray, to the size paper you are using.  Push the tray back into the machine, after you have finished loading.  You are ready to continue or finish your job. And for those, all to often, paper jams, this printer has a cover at the back, that slips right out so that you can conviently remove your jammed paper, slip the cover right back on and you are ready to resume your print job with very little effort. Another excellent feature of this printer, is the ink cartridges.  The ink cartridges are located inside the clearly marked cover, with four separately marked, color coded, ink cartridges.  That can be purchased at most office products stores, or online, at your favorite web site for ink cartridges. Paper and ink refills are inexpensive to buy for this product.  The machine itself is a geat value for the results you will get, using this machine.

The machine itself is excellent.  The printing is great and the scanning and copier are very good too.  The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to buy Brother ink.  You can't buy the compatible.  I used it and when I called "Help" they had me go buy all Brother ink and replace the ones i had in the machine with it.  Then I was to call them back.  It turned out I had the machine for two years and the print heads went bad.  I never got to use the Fax so I don't know how that works.  All in all if you can afford to buy the original ink it is worth buying the machine.

**Is price really all that matters?**For me the answer is a resounding NO. Little did I know this inexpensive 3-in-1 couldn't handle business card perforated paper by Avery, which I use a lot. So I am bummed. Plus, I discovered that this printer uses an abnormally large number of separate ink cartridges. Steer clear, I'd say, of this one. Brother surely has a better product out there...
