Good inexpensive printer

We got this laser printer for a good price (under $100). It prints well. When the light indicating the toner cartridge needs replacing came on, we taped over the sensor (google it online and find a place telling you how to do it for this model) and it's continued to print well for a long time. I print several pages every day. We don't like it that when it runs out of paper and you fill it back up, it doesn't automatically start printing again; you have to push a button - but that's minor. We're happy with the printer overall. It doesn't take up a lot of space and has been reliable. We have it connected via an ethernet cable directly to the router and it works great. All the other computers in our house can be turned off but we can still print from the laptop to this printer because it's still on. There are high capacity toner cartridges available for it that make the price per page cheaper.

The Brother HW-2170W is the first non-HP laser printer I've owned. It has been an unequivocally wonderful experience. You might buy it because it's cheap, but you'll recommend it to your friends because it's a wonderful product.

First, the functionality: This printer offers wired, wireless, and USB connectivity. In a home where several people share the printer, that means it can be put anywhere there's a power outlet - it doesn't have to be on the desk next to the "main computer" in the house. In other words, the kids can print out their homework without having to go into your office.

It is fast, with up to 23 pages per minute. And installation is fast, too - it comes with a setup disk tha...

I was excited when I found this printer. I was tired of having to plug in the USB cable into my laptop and we didn't have a good way to share uor existing inkjet. Also, I was tired of replaced the ink every 100-150 pages at $13 per cartirdge. This unit takes up a minimal footprint, provides wireless connectivity which only takes about 5 minutes to setup and the cost of the toner cartridge is much less (you can get a reman high yield toner (2600 pages based on 5% coverage) for around $30 on various websites).  So on average you will pay around 1.1 to 1.5 cents per impression which isn't too bad considering the low cost of the printer. I got mine on newegg.com for 89.99 with free shipping.

The quality is also very good 2400x600dpi and has a good paper capacity for its size (250 sheets). I am extremely pleased with this unit and would recommend this to everyone who needs an inexpensive wireless printer.

This printer is great. It can be wireless too if you need that. Its quick easier to install, easy cartridge installation too. The printer came with a toner cartridge that didn't last long, but because I registered the printer, Brother sent me an additional cartridge as they knew the ones with the printer didn't last long. The new cartridge they sent last me 8 months and I do a lot of printing. This is small enough to fit on your workstation area too. The boring grey color is a okay as it doesn't show the dust that collects on it so easily from the static. Very Cost effective Laser Printer

In the past the majority of network laser printers have been both too heavy and too expensive as they were intended for heavy-duty office use, but this printer changed everything.

We have been using this printer in our office since last one year and it worked out very cost saving than ink Jet or other laser printer. This Brother HL-2170W printer is a real workhorse. It is meant as a home use or small office printer and it definitely delivers the goods. I have printed thousands of pages on this printer with only a few easy to clear jams. The text quality for laser printers cannot be beat and this one is no exception. Each page it prints has crisp, clear text. Because it is a laser and thus uses toner instead of ink, the printing is impervious to water damage. Unfortunately it only prints black and white but at this price point that is to be expected. This printer does what is asked of it and exceeds expectations. I would definitely recommend it to family members and anyone looking for a small workgroup printer for their small or home office. The toner is cheap and the printer is virtually maintenance free. As long as you use high quality paper you shouldn't see many paper jams. Don't waste your money on HP, go Brother!

Bother-hl-2170w printer bang for the buck

My friend purchased this printer over 1 year ago. He was so happ. y with the ease of setup and value that he convinced me to purchase one as well. It comes with a toner cart which does not last too long (about 200 pages) but I did find a trick on line in which you can tape over a small sensor on the toner and it lasts about another 120 pages. The setup was not as easy as my friend described (and I am tech savy) I had to use the included CD and make some small changes on my network, but I got it to work. Now all of the wireless and 1 wired computer on my network have access to this printer. The print quality is decent (not too dark) but not light either just the right tone for me. It is also quite easy to remove and replace the toner as well. Brother toner is a bit expensive, but if you search you can find generic toner which works quite well for 1/2 the cost. I recommend this printer and would buy it again.

I've ordered quite a few of these Brother printers over the past few years for users I support.  Historically, I've been an HP guy but was disappointed by a few of their most recent laser printers and heard some great things about Brother printers from a fellow IT colleague.  Let me say that I've been greatly impressed by the printer.  It's quite a breeze to setup and I've had any configuration problems with Windows or Macs.  The best part of the printer is its overall cost which is probably due to the low markup from Brother.  In fact, the consumables regularly go on sale and I've found them to be far less in price versus HP, Samsung, Canon, and the other big players in the field.  Drivers are routinely updated on the Brother website as well to address potential problems.  Overall, I've been a very satisfied Brother owner and hope they release larger sized models in the not to distant future.

Great printer for the home office.

I bought this Brother HL-2170W printer several months ago at Staples for $50. I don't regret this purchase as all since this device has served our home office well. Not only is it well-priced but it's also fairly compact and fits onto my small desk alongside my desktop computer. However this printer also has some issues. The build quality is certainly not exactly robust. The outer shell feels fairly cheap and ready to break. But if it just sits there on the desk I don't think any harm would come to it. Just don't expect to drop it and have it survive.

The wireless setup is also a pain. I thought it would be fairly painless but the setup took about five hours for me and I consider mysel...

I purchased the Brother HL-2170W black and white wireless laser printer a few months ago and have been using it a lot every week since. I print out a lot of things and the quality and speed of this printer amazes me. The fact that it is also wireless and that I could print at such a rate and quality without having to deal with any wires makes it an even more amazing product. I have printed out a lot of pages so far and I am still not even close to using up all of my toner yet. The toner for this printer also is not that expensive. I have seen it a few times on Meritline for less than 20 dollars when it is on sale. The wireless setup is really easy to set up and easy to use. 

Although I purchased this as a factory refurbished, it has been working amazingly well like it was fresh and brand new out of the factory's distribution center. I would recommend this product to everyone because the positives outweigh the negatives and everything works perfectly.

The Brother HL-2170W is the first laser printer I have ever owned and I do not regret the purchase at all. The speed at which it churns out the documents is amazing. Compared to those all-in-one printers you see these days, The Brother HL-2170W beats them out hands down. 

I have yet to use the wireless feature of this printer. It seems to be a nice addition to the product. I can see how it can be useful to those that want to keep the printer farther away from the printer. 

After printing about 500 pages, the starter toner seems to still be going strong. 

Duplex printing is possible. However, it requires the user to manual flip the paper over and re-insert the paper back into the paper tray. It is not too big of a hassle, but it must also be stated that other bigger laser printers are able to printer duplex without this hassle.

All in all, I am very happy with this product. In the future, I will be sure to choose the Brother brand again.

I've bought this Brother HL-2170w monochrome laser printer two years ago never regretted since.  This is my first laser printer that I've owned.  I've been an inkjet owner for the past ten years or so before owning this laser printer and I've been regretting owning inkjet for such a long, tedious time.  It's such a ink hog that although the inkjet printers are cheap to obtain, we have to keep purchasing inks to replace which will make owning the inkjet printer super expensive.  I've yet to replace my toner in this monochrome laser printer once and I'm glad I bought this two years ago.  It haven't disappointed me once.  It's efficient in printing and it sleeps wh...

Great compact printer

I've had very few problems with this printer after owning it for over a year. The initial network set-up was a breeze, and I was up and running in no time. I find that the wired and wireless capabilities of this printer is very useful, especially if you have multiple computers in the house. For those who don't want to have the printer-connected computer on at all times when printing from another computer, this printer connects to the router and eliminates that hassle.

The only problem I have with this printer is the shady toner sensor. Once it gets to a certain point, the printer basically stops printer altogether, even if there is plenty of toner left in the cartridge. This, I believe, is a questionable way the manufacturer uses to get people to buy more and more toner. All I had to do was place a small post-it over the sensor, and I was able ot print again. I have to say, I was very impressed with the amount of toner in the starter kit - I have yet to replace it!

When we upgraded all our desktop PC's to Windows 7 64-bit we could no longer print to our aging Minolta printer. After searching in vain for drivers we finally decided it was time to purchase a new printer.  After reading several reviews on the Brother HL-2170W I figured that this one would fit the bill.  Installation was very straight forward.  Plug the unit into a open port on your router and then run the supplied install disk on each computer.  That's it.  The problems we had with our old printer are now a thing of the past.  Our new Brother printer prints every time without paper jams or error and with nice clear sharp quality text.  I also learned a trick you can use to extend the life of the toner cartridges.  Place a piece of black tape over one of the holes at either end of the toner.  This tricks the sensor into thinking there is still enough toner and allows you to get the maximum number of prints out of them.

I bought this printer because I was tired of buying little expensive ink cartridges for my inkjet printers. The amount of money that I was spending on ink was not worth it. So I decided to invest in this Brother HL-2170W laser printer. I've had this printer for more than a year and I'm still on the original toner cartridge that came with the printer. It prints pages really quickly and prints much clearer than a regular inkjet printer. Most of my printing is online printable coupons, so having a quick and clear print is a must. This printer also has wireless printing capabilities but I have not got that working yet. I tried once and failed, so I'll try again some other time. I would recommend this printer to everyone. If you don't need a printer that prints color pictures, this is the printer for you. You get faster printing and better quality which I believe makes life easier. I've also seen the toner cartridges pretty cheap, so no more spending $50+ for new ink. A+.
