Decent laser printer for the price

Overall
Rated 4 out of 5

After reading good reviews on the brother printer I decided to purchase this model, since it was getting expensive buying ink catridges for my ink jet printer.  As a student I do a lot of printing on a weekly based to print out notes or essays.  It has been two years since I purchased the printer, and I have yet to change the catridge.  The quality of the print is still good with no streaks.

The speed of the printing is fast and for a laser printer the size is pretty compact.  There are no draw backs to the printer.  The tray holds a sizable amount of paper and there aren't a lot of unnecessary software installations required to run the printer unlike some other printer manufacturers.

However, the biggest draw at the time of purchase was the price of the printer which was only 25 dollars, which is equivalent to the price of one ink jet cartidge.  Get this printer if you are only going to do black and white printing.

Can't live without it!

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

I have had this printer for about 1 year now and have purchased 2 toners. And I print... A LOT. It's super fast and can handle anything I throw at it. Not to mention it has survived a very rough 2 year old. I can't believe it's still working after all it has been through at our house! My husband loves it too and is always saying he wants one for work.

The printer is priced affordably and the toner is about $20. I purchase 2 each year. I print a lot with it and was spending a fortune on ink with my inkjet printer. $40 a year for toner is a great price for me. The paper tray is large and holds plenty of paper. I haven't had a single paper jam either. I fan the paper on all 4 sides before sticking it into the printer. I usually use a heavier paper but haven't had any issues with lighter weights on the occasion that I use it.

This is a great printer if you only need black a white. The price is right and you can't go wrong. It's a work horse.

I Love It!

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

If you shop around, you can get this printer for an excellent price; if you shop, you can get the toner for this printer for an excellent price. These two facts combined make this printer absolutely excellent! My husband had no difficulty whatsoever installing this printer, and even though I'm not the best at this kind of thing, I had no problems going in on my computer and changing the settings to maximize the toner efficiency (I really do suggest this...it works wonders and I don't really notice a difference in the print quality, so tell your computer to default to the max efficiency settings). My husband is in graduate school and I print a lot of coupons and things for church, so we print...

Brother 2140 - Why anything else?

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

This printer is amazing! I never have problems with it! I print a LOT of coupons from this printer. This printer is used daily in our family and we have had it for about 6 months and have only refilled the toner once! The demo toner that came with it lasted for months! I went only and for only $30, including shipping, I was sent another full sized toner. It has not needed to be replaced since! I was hesitant about laser printers at first, but especially if you do not need color, this printer is the way to go! It is very user friendly. I am mother and I figured out how to replace the toner all by myself! Setting up is easy too, especially if you have a Mac computer. I recommend this printer to everyone I know. I've seen it for as low as $50.00 before in several different places. The amount of money I save on this printer (on both toner/ink and coupons I print) is phenomenal and well worth the investment.

Brother HL-2140: A Great Printer!

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

The Brother HL-2140 is a wonderful laser printer. It is cheap, durable, and efficient. Having a Brother HL-2140 has made networking all my household computers a breeze, especially because of it's wireless capabilities and easy set-up. And seriously, you can print out like, 2,000 pages on one cartridge of toner, and after that, the toner is inexpensive to refill. Pages print quickly and efficiently--you don't feel like you're bleeding ink with every print job. Having the Brother HL-2140 around makes it so that I no longer get paranoid about having to print things!

I would say that the only two downsides to the Brother HL-2140 is the fact that it is unable to print in color and that it is not multi-functional. If it were able to scan or fax, it would definitely be the only printer in the household. However, since I occasionally need to print in color or scan documents, I just use the Brother HL-2140 as my primary and my other printer as a backup.

The Brother 2140 is perfect for a home office

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

I use my printer exclusively for school, and really appreciate that it is much faster than an inkjet, and much crisper for text.  If you don't care to print in color or print any photos, this is an excellent home office printer.

You should be warned, however, that the manufacturer included an automatic toner detection system that allows only for a certain number of pages.  I can guarantee that you will encounter an empty toner error before you actually run out of toner.  This problem can be easily remedied, however.  It is easy to remove the toner cartridge after experiences such an error and cover up the sensor -- this allows you to block the error.  I'm ...

Love this little B/W printer

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

I bought this printer at a great sale at Staples for $49 and it has been a workhorse! I was tired of paying for cartridges for my ink jet and had read that this printer was a great alternative. I use it mostly for my kids school papers, printing off coupons, and household documents from time to time. I have been very happy with it and have had it for about 6 months now. I am still using the original toner that came with it but it did indicate recently that I was low on toner. I had heard that if you covered the sensors on the cartridge you could print lots more and so I did and I am still using that original cartridge. I think it was easy to set up and it does not aggravate me with paper jams, etc. I could not be happier about this purchase!

A Great Printer for Those That Only Want to Print

Overall
Rated 4 out of 5

I absolutely love this printer.  I bought this printer when I needed just a printer to bring with me to school to use in my dorm.  I loved how this printer was relatively inexpensive and had a toner that lasted a very long time which I was very pleased with.  Some printers, go through toners very quickly and often you spend more money buying toners than on the actual printer itself.  However, this is not the case here.  I also love how this printer prints pages very quickly, which is great for college students who are always on the go.  It is also unobtrusive and does not take up too much room in my dorm room, and holds a lot of paper.  I am disappointed in the fact that it only prints in black and white.  However, that hasn't been much of an issue for me as I only use it to print out school papers and do not need the color function too often.  I also dislike how the printer is often prone to printer jams.

A Necessity for Every Student

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

The Brother HL-2140 Laser Printer is the greatest thing to happen to printing since the printing press was first invented. It prints documents at incredible speed and is easy and functional for those of us who are not technology professionals. Three of these printers are owned in my family... Why? Quality is the answer. You can either connect your laptop or desktop to the printer via a double-ended USB cord or print wireless. The wireless option takes a few more minutes to install, but this feature cannot be beat. The toner cartridges last a long time (print ~2000 pages) and the printer itself is not outrageously expensive. Check for local sales - I bought mine for under eighty-dollars brand new. Happy hunting.

best low cost laser printer

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

This is the only laser printer in the $50 price range worth getting in my opinion.  I've had previous Brother printers in the past and have come back because they have treated me well and I trust their name and quality.  This printer is very portable and has a very small foot print.  So if you don't have a lot of space on your desk or in your office, this is a definite plus.  The starter toner is very reasonable.  I've already printed hundreds of pages and still have plenty of toner left.  I read that there is a trick to extend the life of the starter toner by placing a piece of tape to trick the printer into thinking that there is more toner left.  This is good because there is actually a lot of pages left that the toner can print, even though it is reading low.  The print quality is excellent, as expected from a laser printer.  No smudging or waiting for it to dry like you have to with a inkjet printer.

I like this Brother printer but wish the toner would last longer

Overall
Rated 4 out of 5

I get clear prints from this printer, and have had no paper jams.  Loading paper is easy too.  My only complaint is that is seemed to run out of ink too quickly (but it didn't really seem like it was out of ink because the last few copies I printed were still dark... the light indicated that it was out of toner, though, and it will not allow itself to work when that light indicator is on.)   However, I learned a trick from another website... you just put a tiny piece of black tape over the sensor on the toner cartridge, and it will keep printing tons of copies!  I tried this and it worked!  (It's still going.... I'm wondering when it is REALLY going to run out.)  I can't help but think it was designed so that you must constantly replace the toner, therefore they make more money.  After "fixing" the toner problem, I am very pleased.  The printer runs quietly, efficiently, and quickly.  I would purchase it again.

best printer ever

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

i just purchased this laser printer not too long ago.  one thing i regret most is that i never purchased this printer earlier.  getting a laser printer is very convenient and a lot cheaper in the long run.  if you go out and buy a regular printer that runs on ink, most likely in the long run it will be very pricey as ink isn't a cheap thing to buy.  with this laser printer, i printed over 500 pages and my ink is still full, it has worked to perfection and i love it so much.  i am a college student so printing is a must and this printer has been very reliable.  unlike the old printers i had, there were so many problems that went along with it.  the paper would always get jammed and the printer took ages and the amount of ink it took to print things was outrageous.  I got this printer for  a very good deal and the ink wasn't that pricey either so i highly recommend to those out there that need a printer to get a laser printer!

Love having a laser printer

Overall
Rated 4 out of 5

I should have bought a laser printer a LONG time ago.  I ordered this printer a few months ago when, I think either Office Depot or Staples was having a great sale with free shipping.  I print a LOT.  I am a crazy coupon lady so I am always printing out coupons and rebate forms, plus I have preschool aged children so I print a lot of homeschool type activities, and of course the standard recipes and whatever random things need printed.  I was tired of always having to replace the ink in my old printer, it was expensive and just did not last as long as I needed it to.  This printer has been a dream.  It only prints in black and white, but we are still using the (...

Excellent printer with an affordable price tag!

Overall
Rated 5 out of 5

Having been using an inkjet printer for years, I wondered if switching to a laser printer would be a good choice. When this printer went on sale for fifty dollars, I saw my opportunity and went for it. This is an excellent printer.

I have been using the same toner in this for going on two years, and I am now a college student, so that is saying something. It's very efficient with its ink and prints very, very fast. The pages instantly shoot out when you click print. It's also fairly compact and works with both Windows 7 and Mac OS Snow Leopard out of the box, no issues at all.

The only con is that this thing uses way too much power. I think it uses like four hundred watts or something, which is just way too much for such a small device. They need to figure out a way to improve energy efficiency on this.

Overall, this is a great little printer. The ink lasts a long time and it's very quick. If you're on a budget, consider this.

My Go-to printer for office work

Overall
Rated 4 out of 5

I own several different printers at home as it's fairly large. I use 2 inkjet printers for scanning and color documents, and I use this brother hl-2140 laser printer for pretty much everything else. Setup is a snap, and it's built quite sturdily. It functions almost like a big-budget laser printer in terms of reliability, toner quality, speed of printing, and longevity. I also like that it has a "toner save" option and resolution options so that I can choose to save some extra ink for drafts and non-essential documents. Best of all, it's wireless capabilities mean that I can hook it up to my router and use it anywhere around the house, which is a huge convenience because I have an in-home network set up and it's essential that I be able to print any documents from any of my 4 computers around the house. The only downside is that the printer lacks any extra capabilities, such as duplex printing and scanning. Overall, it's a great functional laser printer and I highly recommend it.
