Brooms are for Flying! [2000, Henry Holt and Company, ISBN: 0-8050-6410-9], by Michael Rex, is a 32-page children's picture book with a Halloween theme.
The Story
A little girl dressed in a witch costume encourages everyone to follow her throughout the book. Each pair of pages talks about a different body part or items and what it can do related to Halloween, including:
The end features a surprise as the kids take off their masks!
Reading the Story
I have a 5-year-old that is learning to read and she was thrilled to read this entire book. Each page only has about four words, so it is a quick read. Kids who are just beginning to read will need some help with some of the words, but there are some patterns, such as words ending in -ing that my child began to pick up on as she read.
This can encourage kids to be active as they can act out the various activities with the story. The illustrations mainly show kids dressed for Halloween as they do the different actions with the little girl. They aren't scary and everyone looks like they are having fun.
My Viewpoint:
Brooms are for Flying! is a short Halloween book that encourages children to get active along with the words and fun pictures. It has a surprise ending and my kids like the story and fun illustrations of this book.
This book can be used in classrooms as part of activities geared toward Halloween. A web search can give lots of ideas for fun activities to do along with the book.
