If you are anything like me, you stress. A lot. You think. Too much. You worry. Over everything. Relaxation is not in my vocabulary but I know I need to do it. I am not getting any younger and I can't be on edge constantly forever. I guess my family realizes this because I always get relaxation stuff as gifts. The Brookstone Sound Therapy Eye Mask seems like a weird idea but it's actually awesome and helps me to slow down and fall asleep or just relax.

I am very - what's the word - spazzy. You won't find me drawing a blank when we talk. You will be wondering how any one brain can have that many thoughts all at one time. This temperament helps me as far as my writing but hurts me as far as just letting down and relaxing. I can't concentrate on movies unless they are amazing or very fast paced and I can only read books in the bathtub because I feel like I am doing something more than just lying in water or just reading. All this is leading up to why the Brookstone Sound Therapy Eye Mask has become one of my favorite relaxation gadgets. (I said ONE of them. Ha!)

The Brookstone Sound Therapy Eye Mask

This is a combination light blocker and white sound maker in one. The mask is soft, plush terry cloth that is heavenly when wrapped around the head. It has special padding around the eye area so the material doesn't push the eyes and feel painful. It is so soft and so comfortable that it's relaxing on its own. It is adjustable so it will fit snugly on every head. It totally blocks out the light even in a bright room but doesn't push on the eyes or feel suffocating.

The mask comes with five built in sound loops to relax you. You get Evening in the Countryside, Babbling Brook, Chirping Songbirds, Rhythmic Ocean Surf, and Soothing White Noise. Each of these sounds is white noise - that is just quiet non incidental sound that lulls people into a state of relaxation or even sleep. I love white noise, especially the ocean, and it truly helps me to settle down and make my brain quiet down. This has a 30 minute timer so you can set the loop you want and it will shut off at the 30 minute mark, presumably after you are asleep or perhaps to alert you that relaxation time is over. It runs on either batteries or an included AC adapter so it is great for travel.

All that is great but here's the best part. It comes with a jack to fit your iPod or other MP3 player so you can listen to your own favorite music while relaxing. I love that! This sounds crazy but I had to have a particularly tough tooth pulled a while back. I don't do anesthesia, just Novocaine, and I was warned that I would be unhappy being awake for the procedure. Add nerves to that and you can imagine how I was feeling. I loaded up my iPod with songs that always soothe me and brought my Brookstone Sound Therapy Eye Mask with me. With just Novocaine and the mask, I did fine and it was over before the second song. The dentist was amazed that I was so calm after putting on the mask but my brain knows when the mask is on to calm down. The music was high enough that I could still hear what everyone was saying but I could also hear my favorite songs.

I have used the mask for other procedures that people usually have anesthesia for and have come through everything fine. And I am a totally anxious person who isn't afraid of pain but is afraid of everything else when it comes to medical procedures. Yeck. The Brookstone Sound Therapy Eye Mask allowed me to get the procedures done and for me to know what was going on with my health without the use of anesthesia or weird pain meds and narcotics which I refuse to take.

My Viewpoint

This is an excellent device for listening to white noise or your own music. It's VERY comfortable and truly relaxing. For $40.00, I can't recommend it enough. Males and females alike will find relaxation and peace. I never though I would be able to settle down - my heart thumps like I am being chased by a madman when I think about so many things - but the Brookstone Sound Therapy Eye Mask worked. And if *I* can relax, you can. Give it a try. It may seem silly but it is anything BUT silly. It could extend your life. Stress is bad. This mask is very good! 5 stars!
