Brokeback Mountain Review Summary

Brokeback Mountain is an "unusual, well acted serious romantic drama from director Ang Lee (Hulk, The Ice Storm. Two male ranch hands unexpectedly fall in love with each other, yet hide their relationship over decades to blend with society. A real and honest film, the actors of Brokeback Mountain, Jake Gyllenhall and the late Heath Ledger, "did a fantastic job portraying their characters." The loves scenes are so well done with "so much passion and raw emotion, that you don't see two men, just two people who love one another despite the world." A few Viewpoints moviegoers struggled with the idea that the film condoned homosexuality, yet Brokeback Mountain is a "stunning and provocative film and could not have been made and released at a more divisive time in American cultural history."

Clean cut young cowpoke Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and slighty older, more grizzled ranch hand Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) are hired to look after a herd of grazing sheep near the title peak, but in long isolation are surprised when both unleash long buried feelings and give in to an attraction… read full review »

Not trying to bash the movie, however, I think that I did not have a lot of substance.  Not having anything to do with the homosexuality of the film, just the film in general was very dry.  My big emotion, is that I DO NOT want this movie in the household of children.  For some child… read full review »

First, I want to thank the courageous producers and actors for bringing such a meaningful and heartfelt story of enduring, "forbidden" love before the eyes of the American public. This movie reminds me of one of my favorite songs, "Open the Eyes of My Heart (Lord)." It really "tugs at the heartstrings" of the viewer and leaves us wondering how we could have been so blind for so long! With eyes wide open now, we can no longer ignore the echo of the trail of tears that flow down from Brokeback Mountain! — This gripping and powerful love story takes place in Wyoming where two… read full review »

Bottom-Line:  In the final analysis Brokeback Mountain is a stunning and provocative film and could not have been made and released at a more divisive time in American cultural history.  — Let me preface this review by stating that watching two men make out makes me, well, squeamish, but that does not make me homophobic, I am anything but, but it does make me 100% heterosexual.  There is no wiggle room in my sexual preference library; I am squarely a man who enjoys the opposite sex.  I am convinced that the same cannot be said for most men, who have questions,… read full review »

i was not sure if i wanted to see this film or not. It was based on two men watching over a herd.  What convinced me was the simple fact it starred Heath Ledger. — I found the film to be very moving, a very touching film.  the scenery was just beautiful, it was real and honest and the actors did a fantastic job pretraing their charaters. — This is not a film for everyone, but i do think if you go see this film with an open mind, and a loving heart you will fall in love with these two men and what inspiried between them. —… read full review »

This movie was one of the best I have seen in a while that wasn't an action or comedy.  I usually don't get into these kind of movies.  What I enjoyed the most was seeing how far the overall acceptance of my lifestyle has come.  I cannot begin to imagine having to keep quiet for the reasons these two men did, but I can relate to keeping my life to myself none the less.  Kudos to the team that wrote and filmed and acted in this movie for bringing to the open the struggles we have grown… read full review »

This film is so moving and heart wrenching. Ignore the fact that these are two men.  The whole forbidden love concept and the pain and suffering that is caused will tear your heart to pieces. The movie is done with so much compassion for these two tormented souls, that you want to see them together even if it means tearing their families apart.  I really wasn't sure about the love scenes and how I would feel about them. — But they were done with so much passion and raw emotion that you don't see two men just two people who love one another despite the world. The verdict is in... Brokeback Mountain is not just a gay cowboy movie.  It is a powerful and passionate tale of forbidden love. Directed by Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Brokeback Mountain is captivating, moving, and truly a tremendous masterpiece. Based on a short story by Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain is set against the breathtaking Wyoming Mountains (filmed in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta) in the early 1960's. — Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) first meet while working together as sheepherders on Brokeback Mountain.  They… read full review »

I feel if someone hates a movie so strongly they didn't look deep into the meaning of the movie. A movie can mean many different things to each person. Try and see yourself in that persons shoes to see what you would do or how you would feel. I thought the movie was very good, but I didn't just look at it as 2 gay men. It was about 2 people that loved each other and could not display it one because they were gay or could have been from different race's or rich and poor. what ever the reason the love was real and many different people go through this type of love. On that note I… read full review »

I was just blown away with this movie. I went into the theatre thinking I did not want to see a bunch of homosexuals getting it on. It was not like that at all. I really got into the movie. Very well written and you forgot that this was a romance between two men, it was a romance between two people! Very touching and the magnetism of the characters was wonderful! These two men were very convincing and if they are not gay, you sure thought they were. I felt like cheering for them to get together and stop living a lie!!! The passion between the two of them was just magnificent! I cannot… read full review »

When I first watched this, I guess I went in thinking it was going to be something completely different than what it was. I was a bit surprised, to say the least, but I loved the movie. It was a beautiful story about 2 people who were trying to resist what they thought were wrong and yet loving each other so much they could barely stand it. A lot of people wrote bad reviews based on the homosexual nature of the movie, but I don't judge that way. I see past all that and see a wonderful, new age love story that was very sad and emotional. I would recommend this movie for open minded… read full review »

OK, I'll be honest. I went to see this movie because of lurid curiosity and all the hype surrounding it. Boy was I surprised. At some point during this movie you forget all about the fact these are gay men and you get completely wrapped up in their lives.  This is an original love story and its not just your average chick flick. My husband is a muy macho guy but was incredibly impressed by this movie. The scenery alone was worth the price of a ticket. This story keeps you rivetted and rooting for all the unrequited lovers. Great date… read full review »

While this movie has a very well written story line, it was not what I expected.  With all of the hype that surrounded this movie, I expected so much more than what I saw on screen.  I expected, in some way, to be absolutely moved.  Sadly, I was not moved by the movie or the story line.  — Don't get me wrong, it is a very good movie.  I would even watch it again.  It is worth seeing, but perhaps you should not pay any attention to any of the media that surrounds it beforehand. —… read full review »

Despite being a great lover of comedies, I found this to be one of the best movies I've ever seen. You do not have to be gay to really feel the love these men had for each other, or to feel their pain at no being able to do much about that love. My heart broke for them, and their inability to find a way to express that love in the world they lived in. All they had together were brief periods on Brokeback Mountain, and they rest of their lives they lived in pain apart. Very moving.… read full review »

This movie was a big disappointment.  I love Heath Ledger and seeing him in this role I was hesitant to watch any of his other movies.  I thought there would be more of a love story but there wasn't.  In fact is was a sad depressing movie and left you in an odd mood.  The soundtrack was the same sounding song over and over.  There was lots of hate and anger and was just an odd… read full review »
