Brokeback Mountain  —

Clean cut young cowpoke Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and slighty older, more grizzled ranch hand Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) are hired to look after a herd of grazing sheep near the title peak, but in long isolation are surprised when both unleash long buried feelings and give in to an attraction to each other. Both have dreams of someday “ranching up together”, but give in to societal pressures and hide their affair over the course of decades.

As expected, Ang Lee (Hulk, The Ice Storm) frames his tale in beautiful scenic images while wringing every drop of emotion from what is surely the first great original love story of the 21st century. If the same film had been made about a man and woman kept apart by racial or economic differences (as has been done many times before), it would still be a beautiful movie. But making it as an easily buttoned “gay cowboy” movie, Lee and company raise another level of inner conflicts and outer complications for the audience, making the material much more memorable.
