First, I want to thank the courageous producers and actors for bringing such a meaningful and heartfelt story of enduring, "forbidden" love before the eyes of the American public. This movie reminds me of one of my favorite songs, "Open the Eyes of My Heart (Lord)." It really "tugs at the heartstrings" of the viewer and leaves us wondering how we could have been so blind for so long! With eyes wide open now, we can no longer ignore the echo of the trail of tears that flow down from Brokeback Mountain!
This gripping and powerful love story takes place in Wyoming where two men are hired to herd sheep on Brokeback Mountain. The two cowboys spend an entire summer isolated from all other contact with society. During their months of loneliness and isolation, they become increasingly dependent on one another. They bond emotionally and physically. It is a bond that lasts a lifetime.
Each of the two men tries to get on with his own life, marrying, and leading a lifestyle that is expected and accepted by society. Their circumstances don't allow for them to act on the enduring love they have for one another. Their lives are filled with a great deal of pain and anguish over the years as they continue to "live a lie." Their moments of happiness, in a world where there is much hatred against homosexuals, are few and far between. Still, they live for those few days once or twice a year where they can be together.
To know a love as intense and powerful as the love these two individuals felt for one another, can truly be the greatest blessing! Sadly, they were never allowed to openly display their feelings and commitment to one another Their story is very tragic indeed, and their "forbidden" love was never allowed to blossom. Their struggles and their pain are very apparent in their efforts to come to terms with their love. For, their love was a "curse" in an unaccepting society.
It is my hopes that this movie has succeeded in educating people so that we, as a society, are more accepting of homosexuality as a lifestyle. We are all humans. We are all created in love. We are created to love and to be loved. And, each of us loves in different ways.
To my friends, co-workers, and family members who are "gay," I am honored to know you and to hear your story being told. To my son, I love you! And, I am proud to call you my son and honored to know that the "echo of your tears has been heard!"
