The Smithsonian Institution has been called "America's Attic", and if there's a cultural equivalent in England, it's got to be the British Museum. This is an absolutely fascinating place that should be atop every visitor's "must see, must do" list!  It's a huge place, and to do it justice, you simply must allow a minimum of a full day.

What makes this museum so utterly outstanding isn't just its size, it's the quality of its displays and the significance of their exhibits.

This is the museum where you can see the original Rosetta Stone. It's where you can see the original Magna Carta, an original Gutenberg bible, and the first folio of Shakespeare's plays.

During the age of Empire, British explorers claimed far-flung cities and countries for the queen. "The sun never sets on the British Empire," was quite literally true. In all those far-flung destinations, the British proved themselves insatiable pack-rats, picking up every antiquity in sight (and digging for the ones that weren't). That's why there's so much stuff here from around the world (and why there's been the occasional bit of controversy surrounding other countries' claims that British explorers robbed their national heritage.)

My favorite section of this museum is their outstanding Egyptian collection. I am simply stunned by the sight of so many sarcophaguses (or is it sarcophagi?)

The museum is fantastic...and almost as awesome as the exhibits is the price of admission....absolutely FREE!

Mrkstvns sez....LOVE IT!

Ok, I can't believe you're writing about London. I have so many London reviews to do. Luckily I never went here - we needed another week there to do all there is to do. Jo
